Faction Guide faction points in society play?

The question is a general: how does one apply the information presented in the Pathfinder Faction guide to a player character in society play?

There are factions like Osirion which one can be a member of and earn prestige with in normal society play, however the faction is slightly different and not robust as described in the faction guide (it even has more options for prestige expenditures).

On the other hand there are factions which are not listed as a part of the pathfinder society, such as the red mantis or the monk faction. While anything evil is obviously excluded, the book is usable with fps as far as I know. If this is true, I am curious about how to benefit from it (feats, usable prestige, etc) in society. I have a monk who took silver crusade as it was the closest thing to the monk order in the guide (no other option was listed) and a new character which is going osirion and needs to know which of the prestige awards he can acquire since they are different between the field guide and faction guide. Lastly, several monk faction rewards are suspiciously worded in such a manner as to sound like they are one use: ie the +2 initiative and +4 damage on the next attack.
