DM Exercise: Your Kingdom, In A Nutshell of Holding IV

Kingmaker

1 person marked this as a favorite.

What I love most about Kingmaker and growing a kingdom is seeing how it will shape up to be. Every kingdom will have similarities, no doubt, but they will also be very different.

I'm going to be pretty extensive on mine, even while cutting corners, but here's the template form. Of course, anyone can use whatever they're most comfortable with.

Kingdom name:

Government (What's its alignment? Its governing system?)
Leaders (Who has what position? Are they a PC?)
Cities (How many? Which is the capital? What're their names?)
Population and Size (How many people? How far does the kingdom span?)
Duration (How long has it been around?)
Culture (The meat will be here. What is the general ideology and outlook of the kingdom? What are its favorite foods and traditional dishes? Main religion? Music? Holidays? Trade?)
Foreign Relations (What do other kingdoms think of yours?)
History (Major events that shaped the kingdom. Only for kingdoms that have taken non-AP storylines and events or for random kingdom events that really caused some alteration [Plague, Assassination, etc.])

Here goes.

Foreign Relations
Most nations think we are still too young to survive and will eventually fall. Cheliax disdains us, Absalom considers us too far away to trade, Brevoy endorses us, the River Kingdoms are wary of us, and Andoran strongly approves of us. The rest are either waiting for us to die so it is their chance to colonize or expecting us to be conquered by another nation.
==========
History

- After one year, the first ruler of Agrowan, Lasciel (CG Female celestial kitsune bard) ascended after attracting the attention of Daikitsu through song. Following her departure, Agrowan underwent a massive cultural overhaul as the republic system of governance was placed in.

Yeah, I have a problem knowing when to stop <_<

Interesting. will post both of mine as soon as i find the time :)

Iomrall:
>>> Government (What's its alignment? Its governing system?)
Iomrall is a True Neutral colony run by a Viscountess and her council. The colony is for the most part left to self- or local autonomy, run and/or overseen by the monarchy and council. The monarchy is notably based on a hierarchy of assigned successors rather than biological heirs.

>>> Leaders (Who has what position? Are they a PC?)
Ruling Council of Iomrall-PCs marked with a *
Interim rulers are present when PCs are out of the colony for long-term periods (such as the recent trip to Varnhold)

Ruler: Viscountess Elegy Medvyed*
> Interim Ruler: Tessaro Akiniyi
Councilor: Akiros Ismort
General: Sir Jaekah*
> Interim General: Kesten Garess
Grand Diplomat: Tessaro Akiniyi
> Interim Diplomat: Belle Leighn
High Priest: Jhod Kavken
Magister: Sir Errol Genio*
> Interim Magister: Genio Pelagius Francesca
Marshal: Rannulf of the White Scar
Royal Assassin: Mikmek of Sootscale
Spymaster: Dame Lilith of the Ebon Wood*
> Interim Spymaster: Tessaro Glaicyd
Treasurer: Valkeri Sothale, under direction of Svetlana Leveton
Warden: Sir Takeshi*
> Interim Warden: Melinda Linville

> Viceroy to the Sootscale Tribe: Chief Sootscale
> Viceroy to the Agapios Thriae Hive: Mai-Leah of Agapios, by order of Queen Kyriaki Agapios

>>> Cities (How many? Which is the capital? What're their names?)
Four cities.
Dun Raige (Capital, located on northern shore of Tuskwater Lake)
Tatzylford (Located in the middle Narlmarches)
Gildgate (Located at Oleg's Trading Post)
Duskgrove (Located in the southern Narlmarches, at the Dancing Lady's Keep)

>>> Population and Size (How many people? How far does the kingdom span?)
The kingdom has a population slightly over 50,000 and spreads from Oleg's Trading Post/Gildgate to the north and the Tuskwater Swamp to the south, and from the Abandoned Keep of the Dancing Lady/Duskgrove to the west to a few dozen miles to the east of the Sootscale Caverns.

>>> Duration (How long has it been around?)
Iomrall was established in the autumn of the year 6761 AY, and its leaders were dispatched orders to look into the Varnhold Vanishing in the early summer of 6764.

>>> Culture (The meat will be here. What is the general ideology and outlook of the kingdom? What are its favorite foods and traditional dishes? Main religion? Music? Holidays? Trade?)
Iomrall's trade primarily revolves around its fertile farmlands and many apiaries; combined with their recent alliance with the Agapios Thriae hive, honey and honey products such as mead have become a major staple of the region. Iomrall trades regularly with Varnhold, exchanging farm produce for livestock and warhorses.

Much of Iomrall's culture centers around the arts and education, with great effort and expense put into centers of learning by its leadership. Dun Raige and Tatzylford are both home to extensive schools, with Dun Raige's primarily focused on traditional, military, and political education and Tatzylford on magic, classical education, and the arts. Duskgrove is looking to be similarly expansive, with a focus on medicine and similar arts.

Religions regularly embraced in Iomrall include Corian (NG god of knowledge and transmortality), Freya (TN goddess of magic), Nyx (NE goddess of occult magic), Atargatis (NG goddess of civilization and protection), Cernunnos (CN Faerie Lord of the Wyld Court), Titania (NG Faerie Lord of the Summer Court), and Arachne (LG goddess of craftsmanship and spiders).

>>> Foreign Relations (What do other kingdoms think of yours?)
Iomrall has official alliances with two of its three neighbors, fellow colonies Varnhold to the east and Weuland to the southwest. Its relationships with the other two colonies to the west, Drelev and Shadrach, are more terse but not hostile.

>>> History (Major events that shaped the kingdom. Only for kingdoms that have taken non-AP storylines and events or for random kingdom events that really caused some alteration [Plague, Assassination, etc.])
In addition to dealing with the incursion of the troll king Hargulka Fire-Eater and their recent dispatch east to investigate the Varnhold Vanishing and the plight of the Nomienn tribe, the Lords of Iomrall have also dealt with otherworldly horrors in the netherworld of the World's Shadow breached in the Tower of Candlemere, aligned with the silver dragon Eranex the Runemarked as their draconic representative in the Long Game of the dragons of the Northlands (the anti-civilization wilderness ruled by dragons from whence the Stolen Lands have been carved), driven back an invasion by agents of the shadowy Lost Court of the fey, and after the defeat of the Dancing Lady and her unintentional revival by assassin Rigg Gargadilly took the revitalized ex-fey - now returned to her original personality - under their wing, making her one of their closest allies.

They have likewise triumphed heavily at their first visitation to the annual Rushlight Tournament of Shadrach, provided their hosts with new ideas for the following year's celebration, arranged an alliance with a local Thriae hive, established a broad and unprecedented tolerance for racial populations of all sorts, and uncovered an underground cult cell of Irshya (NE goddess of envy and harpies), where they found several orphaned harpy chicks that the council has taken great pains to see raised to be proper and welcome citizens of the colony.

*dusts this off*

So, I'm using a different name but... well, been a LONG time since I posted this, and needless to say, Agrowan developed very, VERY nicely. And gloriously. And then tragically. Let's just say it's the setting for my custom horror campaign currently, hehehehe.

I found out the perfect way to share the nation without long, extravagant descriptions and boring lists. To do so, you will need Maptool. The required version (1.4.0.0) can be downloaded here.

Got it? Good. Now you'll need the campaign file itself. Got it? Great, go ahead and launch Maptool, open it from the File menu in the upper left, and enjoy an interactive map experience. Click on the key locations to find out more about them... and do forgive the area formerly known as Innsmouth. It wasn't my players' most creative moment.
