If they just used Egghead's actual name, Elihas Starr, he could be the villain. Somebody, maybe even Pym or Lang, might constantly call him Egghead as a joke that finally tips him over the edge and leads to him becoming a villain.

I'd like The Controller show up as Ant-Man's adversary. The Controller's abilities are almost like an evil, funhouse mirror version of Ant-Man's. Pym uses his helmet to control ants but, unless, they're smashed during a fight, the ants are unharmed. The Controller, on the other hand, actually leeches strength from the people controlled by his slave discs to give himself super strength and durability. The Controller's also got a tie to Thanos who upgraded his tech so he could fight the Avengers. Maybe they'll save him for phase 3.

If Jan gets into the movie, it would be nice if they left her skills as a fashion designer intact. She had somewhere around 40 different costumes so it'd be neat to see a reference to that. With what Wright said about having both Pym and Lang in the film though, I wonder if we'll end up with an older Janet and, perhaps, Cassie Lang becomes her replacement by the end of the movie? I doubt it would happen and I'm not sure I would like that but, hey, Pym doesn't build Ultron in this universe so what the hell.

Dark Archive

Janet keeping her fashion designer roots could be fun. I loved the era where she had a different costume almost every time she appeared, since she was using her superhero career to 'advertise' her stuff. (Easier to have superheroes model your designs when you are one of them!)

Other than Booster Gold, not enough superheroes use their superheroing as a springboard for their mundane careers (most, like Stark and Pym, go the other way, and use their skills and inventions to become superheroes), and the way Jan was doing it was way less crass and self-serving than the way Booster started out (even if he grew into a much more heroic figure, as time went on).

They've been doing a fair bit of mix and matching Ultimates elements (such as Nick Fury) in with '616' elements. I wonder if Jan is going to be someone who starts out with some (we can't call them mutant) abilities, such as generating bio-electricity, and then gain some of the other stuff (bug wings, bug control, shrinking) from Pym. Their meeting could be when Jan's father retains Pym to find a way to help his daughter deal with out of control excess bio-electricity, which he uses his magic do-anything Pym particles to deal with (allowing her to shunt the excess electricity into wherever the heck the mass goes when they shrink, or comes from, when they grow), and, in the process, she learns about all the other cool stuff his inventions can do, and, as in the comics, pressures him into giving her the full set of powers so that she can join in a life of superhero adventure.

The Wasp is currently shagging Havok, btw.

Spidey works best alone or paired with ONE other hero. I've never been a fan of him as a member of the Avengers.

Wolverine....meh. I could stand it, as long as he was a member of the gorup, and it didn't become yet another Wolverine solo movie, where he deigns to let the Avengers have cameos instead of the X-Men.

Back in the 80's there was a crossover graphic novel between spidey and wolverine. I own it and re-read it often, though for the life of me I can't remember the author and artist.

Essentially an assassin ex-girlfriend from wolvie's past stumbles into spidey's life after a mob hit. Unfortunately for both guys she's marked for death herself and flees the country to East Berlin (back when there WAS an East Berlin). So the whole comic is about contrasting the two heroes who reluctantly team up to save her. I won't spoil the ending but suffice it to say Peter commits an act that Logan routinely does without thinking and it haunts him for the entire last page of the comic.

That was the bit I love. Spidey back then was so cocky, so sure of everything. He was also so well established and apple pie American it was easy to forget: he was just a teenage kid. Then there's the ending and the look they draw on Peter's face as he relives it again and again... it was really powerful.

THAT'S what a wolverine/spider-man team up should be.

I agree with the rest of your post except the part quoted above: there's not a day that goes by where I'm not hoping they "JOIN" the Patrick Stuart Prof X with the current Avengers movie universe... As for FF, there's not a day that goes by where I'm not hoping they push the big red RESET button on that whole garbage franchise...

As for the Spidey movies, i've enjoyed them so far, but ditto: I hope they join him with the current Avengers universe or reset him with a new actor and then fit him into that universe

Essentially: it makes no sense to me to have that Avengers tower stand there, have that huge "Battle of New York" and never see a glimpse of Spidey.... unless they're following the comics chronologically (i.e. Spidey was prob still in junior high when they founded the Avengers / rescued Cap...)

Sony and Marvel actually don't have a problem working together. It's FOX who are horrible, terrible people, as usual.

There were talks of putting the Oscorp tower in the Avengers movie, and also of putting the Avengers tower in spidey 2, but, unfortunately, they didn't pan out. But there was and still is goodwill between the two.

The 'battle of New York' really didn't last that long. Less than an hour, for sure, so it's entirely possible that Spider-Man was caught across town, or was in a situation where he wouldn't have received up to the second notification that something big was happening across town (like in a lab or taking a test at college or taking a nap after a busy night or one of many other situations in which a young person might have their cell phone off and not immediately get a bazillion text messages telling them that New York was being invaded by aliens).

The X-Men operate out of upstate New York, IIRC, so even if they only took 15 minutes or so to get dressed and scramble into the Blackbird, they might not arrive until it was over.

The Fantastic Four, on the other hand, must have been exploring the Negative Zone or something, 'cause they would have been more in the middle of it, in a Marvel Universe that included them.

Daredevil had an epic battle with a single Chitauri, but it happened in an alleyway that Iron Man was flying over so fast that nobody even noticed it. It was like that fight between Happy and the security guard in Iron Man 2, where he's all like 'Ha! I beat him!' and looks around and sees (well, senses) that everybody else beat like, a million of them.

Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch and Giant Man and the Wasp also took out a bunch, but we didn't see them. All those Chitauri that just inexplicably fell over when the bomb went off? That was totally the Scarlet Witch.

Quicksilver had been zipping around stealing their guns and setting off their grenades and other mean speedster stunts, and stopped by Wanda as the bomb went off and said, "So what are the odds that there will be some sort of feedback through their communications systems or something that will electrocute all the remaining aliens?" and Wanda smiled and made her 'I hex you!' gesture as scarlet energy like liquid seeped up from the shattered ground all around her and 'rained' into the sky and she said, "100 percent." and the Chitauri all fell over.

@ Set: but what about Doctor Strange? Hmm? Where was HE when all this was going down?

...

Seriously though, this is a thread about Ant-Man. A guy I hadn't even remembered WAS an avenger til I watched the cartoon movie w/my kids a year ago. Needless to say, I'm a Paul Rudd fan and a total SUCKER for any super hero movie...so I'll probably go see it.

As for beating his wife, that's GOTTA be after I stopped obsessing over comics. That being said, that's what I like about Marvel. In DC (back when I was reading mind you, years ago) things were always so cut and dry. Marvel had Harry Osbourne with a drug problem, one of Cap's sidekicks on cocaine, Spidey having to make rent and hold down a job, Tony Stark the alcoholic. I have always enjoyed Marvel's attempts to capture real life in their stories, as much as you can with living gods like super heroes.

Frankly I wish the movies would reflect some of that. For that reason I LOVED Spider-Man 1 & 2 with Toby McGuire. Go ahead, laugh. Then look at the apartment he lives in, and whether or not he REALLY got the girl, or any of the myriad other life moments he had. "Peter...don't tell Harry..." Yeah, THAT happened!

I really don't want to see X-Men. The other superhero groups work. I would probably do Fantastic 4 as not becoming fantastic yet. But the X-men exist in a world that is fundamentally different than the Avengers movies.

In X-men, people with world changing superpowers have been fighting for rights since WWII, and possibly earlier. They are very public, to the point where they are actively fighting for legislation. There have been race wars going on for decades.

In the Avengers movie universe, you don't have that. They talk about how people aren't ready to learn that there are even low level mutants like the ones being protected by Shield in the TV series. Tony Stark looked confused when Fury even hints at the possiblity of other superheroes existing at the end of Iron Man 1, and I don't feel like that was just his ego.

Sure, you can pull a handful of mutants into the Avengers universe, but to do the X-Men properly you need to throw in so much other stuff that the entire existing continuity no longer makes sense.

I disagree. It would not be hard to marry the X-Men within the existing Avengers universe. The mutants have NOT been public since WWII: in fact the only ones who knew about them was that Kevin Bacon nazi guy on one side, and the CIA on the other. Do you think that the CIA in a Cuban Missile environment issued regular broadcasts of the secret debriefs going on in regards to this new "mutant" department? Remember the top CIA officials were not even on board with the idea at first and thought it was frivolous attempt at "creating" some paranormal department (if I was in charge of CIA and a hippy-style guy PhD named Charles Xavier came to me and made a few magic tricks, would I hand over a blank check?)

Secondly: Nick Fury. This guy is in the know about mutants and other superheroes... in this version of the Avengers he's the founding member of the Avengers. He's the one pulling heroes together one by one. It is perfectly conceivable that he's been aware of the X-Men the whole time and he's waiting to pull that card when he needs it. Not exactly a reference, but look at the online Facebook game "Marvel Alliance" where ALL members of the marvel universe are being coordinated together by Nick Fury, Mariah Hill, Agent Coulson... that's X-Men, Daredevil, Spidey, Doc Strange, Heroes for Hire, etc. all working with Avengers... and recently some bad guys are joining the SHIELD team: Juggernaut, Loki, Sabretooth, Constrictor, Electra, and even Dr. DOOM... when the threat is against Thanos and other interplanetary adversaries such as the dimensional incursions happening now, the bad guys seem to rally and help (the smart ones anyways)

Maybe the mutants haven't been well known since world war 2, but they definitely established mutants as being a known political issue that could rally voters, as early as the first X-men movie. So it's probably safe to say that mutants were public knowledge for the last three decades at least.

but they are not probably at the forefront of American concerns; while i agree they may have been made into a huge deal in the xmen movies, i don't think a major retcon would be required to include them in the avengers universe... just a few clever quips by Fury would be enough

Well there was that whole attempted assassination of the President of the United States thing...

Yeah, based on the plotlines of X-men 1 and 2, I don't think the political climate around mutants is the same as, say, climate change or even gun laws. Think of it like this: it's a civil rights issue where members of the oppressed minority could destroy a city and one has tried to kill the president... in the oval office... in broad daylight.

And by "destroy a city" I don't mean aligning their faction and a WMD strategically over the course of a months to strike vulnerabilities and such. I mean in an afternoon, from their living room.

I agree that the X-men would be hard to drop into the current Avengers 'verse. Not impossible mind you, just hard.

Indeed, the power spike and heavy handedness of antagonist mutants in x men really changes the storyline - there is no good way to fold them into the movieverse just yet.

Sovereign Court

hmmm... good points in regards to the attempt on the President, but a montage at the beginning of Ant-Man is all it would take (news clips summarizing what mutants did)

so you'd have the Ant-Man movie starting against a backdrop of recent mutant activity, and he could be commissioned by government to create a weapon that targets the x gene... then he finds the Pym Particles by accident! :)

Sovereign Court

(the above montage / backdrop could be used by any number of Marvel movies)

Liberty's Edge

Meanwhile, back in the original conversation...We've got our Ant-Men.

I'm rather intrigued by this casting.

So MD is Pym, retired, and the villain but NOT the villain? I like him as either one or the other; not both.

Liberty's Edge

Edgar Wright responded via Twitter that the villain part was misreported. It's at the bottom of the article. So Michael Douglas is playing Hank Pym, retired hero.

I've seen some comments that it doesn't make sense for there to be a retired Ant-Man when super heroes are supposed to be a new thing in the MCU. That's ridiculous. This is a guy who can shrink down to the size of a rice grain (maybe smaller if they keep the same power level as the comics.) If ever there were a superhero who could save the world without anyone noticing his actions, it's Ant-Man. I think it'd be cool if it turns out he even operated as a superhero without SHIELD being aware of his presence.

It's also ridiculous because he still postdates Captain America

MMCJawa wrote:

Yes, but everyone thought of Captain America as propoganda and not an actual superhero.

Except Coulson. He knew the truth. Had the trading cards and everything.

I hear what you're saying about MD not being the villain, but in the article it mentions: why bring him up if he's a really expensive cameo? I think there's more to Mike's presence in the movie than just an interlude.

Do not forget that as Yellow Jacket, Pym was one of the Avengers top foes, and for a while a serious vilian in his own right (up until the point when Egghead framed him, and that seemed to be a turning point, for a while)

At least that's what this 50 year old who stopped reading comics twenty five years ago remembers

Liberty's Edge

Looks like we have one of two villains now too. I really like Michael Peña so this is good news to me. From the sound of this:

"...Peña would be playing: "Castillo," one of the film's villains, and a fictional analogue of real-life Cuban leader Fidel Castro. "Castillo" is allegedly the film's villain during an opening 1960s sequence, which sees Hank Pym as Ant-Man fighting against communism..."

I'm pretty excited. I really want this Castillo character to turn out to be a version of El Toro, a communist leader Hank and Jan fought in the 60's. He's pretty lame as far as super villains go, but he's a good pick for a flashback scene.

What about the Tarantula? Maybe he was a Daredevil/Spider-Man villain though. He had spiky shoes and excellent fighting prowess; he was also Latin American IIRC. So long as it includes a lot of posing and explosions, I don't care.

Who's Rashida Jones going to be? What if they went with the Wasp and she turned good in the end? Again, so long as there's poses and explosions, it really doesn't matter.

I always remember Spider-Man fighting the Tarantula in a 70's issue, and maneuvering him into piercing what I recall was a water tower with both toe-tips, there to hang suspended.

" ... I will ...!"
Spidey gives him a little chin music. Wham!
" ... wake up in jail."

I love that version of Spider-Man.

Liberty's Edge

Tarantula was almost exclusively a Spider-Man villain so little chance of seeing him in a Marvel Studios movie. I don't expect to see him in the Spider-Man movies either, but Spidey's entire rogues gallery is with Sony for the time being.

@Mark Hoover - Rashida Jones seems to be in the running to play Janet who was always good so I'm not sure what you meant by "turned good in the end" Did you mean Rita DeMara aka Yellowjacket II? She was in the Masters of Evil and did eventually switch sides to become an Avenger.

Rashida Jones? You're kidding. That's as brilliant as, say, Jessica Alba as the Invisibl—

Oh.

Never mind.

Sovereign Court

Never seen Rashida Jones before. Or forgot all about her...strange, she is cute.

Very cute. Looks nothing like Janet Van Dyne.

She looks a little like the Janet of the 1970's and 1980's

We'll agree to disagree. That's the Janet with which I'm most familiar, and I ain't buyin' that, Terquem.

Eye of the beholder, I suppose.

An attractive brunette woman who was raised in wealth and luxury?

Yeah, I don't know how she'd pull off playing Janet Van Dyne, an attractive brunette woman who was raised in wealth and luxury.

Well, it certainly wouldn't be acting, by your own logic, now would it? ;)

I was referring to her physical appearance, actually.

Hmm ... I'm now actually looking at Rashida Jones.

I was clearly thinking of someone else, so I'm going to have to stand corrected on this. (This is Quincy Jones' kid, right?) Yeah, she would work.

Just ignore me. I have no idea who I was thinking of.

When I made my comment about Ms Jones I must've misread the article VZ. I thought it said she was slated to be one of the villains. My train of thought was:

1. It'd be cool for her to be in the movie, but as Janet AKA the Wasp
2. She's slated to be a villain
3. It'd be cool if they changed the story so Janet meets Ant Man as a villain, then turns good in the end

...and then I posted. C'mon Velcrus Ziprus; can't you read minds through the internet yet? :)

Still if they DID go Yellowjacket II that'd be freaking awesome!
