should attack spells have the magic trait?
This question came about because my friend had to fight a monster that could only be killed by an attack with the magic trait. She was playing the Druid and had one or two attack spells. However she decided that because the spells did not have the “Magic” trait it would not kill the monster. So is she right? Or is it assumed that the attack spells have the magic trait?

Yes. All attack spells should have the Magic trait (and they do). They also have the attack trait.
You're talking, however, about the check having the Magic trait, which is different. Things that replace combat checks (eg spells and weapons) can add their traits to the check.
The FAQ entry says:
Some cards may allow you to replace the required skill for a check with a different one; as part of this action, you may play only 1 card or use only 1 power that changes the skill you are going to use. When you play a card that does this, add that card’s traits to the check; for example, revealing the weapon Longsword +1 for your combat check adds the Sword, Melee, Slashing, and Magic traits to the check.
So using a spell to defeat a Shadow (which requires a Magic trait check to defeat) will defeat it. Toxic Cloud (because it only modifies a check, and doesn't replace it) does not.
