Any tips on MMOs that allow you to....

Pathfinder Online

Here's the thing, my little brother is interested in an MMO that would let you pretty much do what PFO is promising: own territory, be a king/general/some form of leader (if he's lucky enough to get that far) where you can also invade other players' lands and such. I think one such possibility was shadowbane but the emulator for it isn't working properly for him....if there's anyone even playing.

I recommended EVE for him, but he couldn't stand the gameplay that he didn't understand (there were a lot of features that excited him, but the gameplay just wasn't his style).

I guess what he's probably looking for is an MMO that revolves around player created content. He's still ticked off that I didn't tell him about the PFO kickstarter :P (in my defense, I had no idea this was the type of games he was interested in).

I'm not sure that even Pathfinder Online is going to deliver what you're looking for. The initial world is only going to be a relatively small area of territory. I don't think you'll be able to do what Aaron Burr once attempted. (and failed at., go carve yourself a bunch of land and simply rule it. What it looks like it's going to be is essentially a land bound version of Eve Online, only without the massive sized safety zones.

Those features won't be in at the start, but they will be in at some point. Getting in early will really allow you to get ahead of the curve and help shape the game.

Anyway welcome to you and your brother. Stinks to not be in the first month but it means the game will have more features when he gets in.

The strange thing is, there isn't any good sandbox of the kind you are describing (except possibly EvE, which he already tried) in my opinion. PFO and a few others in development (see this thread) may hopefully fill that gap in the somewhat near future.

EVE, Darkfall, Mortal, Xsyon and Wurm all have territory ownership and the ability to create your own nation. Wurm is primarily faction based though (Player made kingdoms are not easy to start and always at a disadvantage), and you couldn't conquer territory in Xsyon last time I checked in on it.

I've read up / watched up (lol) on Wurm and that seems fairly close to "have your own nation / settlement crafted/built for yourself?

Albion Online looks like a PFO-lite and is not far from launch. You might look at that.

Thanks for the tip guys, following the link to another thread, I found out about something called life is feudal (although...the name of the game is a pun...? I like puns, but as for the name of a video game, I mean come on) which actually has me interested, I think my brother would be really excited about it. I'll check up on the others (although, just a quick question, is there any nudity or sexual content in them? I know there's a whole thing where 'you're fine with him watching violence but against nudity and sexual content?!', but different strokes or something like that) and recommend he check them out.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would like to encourage you to explain to your brother what PFO has to offer, along the lines of what he is looking for.

Based on what you have said, he wants to lead, build and control. All of these can be done in PFO.

Build and Control:

The most important aspect of the game that we will be "building" and have almost full control over is our Characters. PFO is based on the concept that the character is the content, and your character development is the "end game". You do not get this from your typical Theme Park MMO, or evn a TT RPG.

Leadership:

You can have a variety of leadership roles in PFO. You can start as a rank-and-file member of a company, or a mere citizen of a settlement, and rise to a variety of leadership positions. Leadership is not just a political or military function either. You can be a leader that fills the role of a mentor, or a master craftsmen, or a company / settlement social events planner. Again, these are Sandbox MMO features, often not found in Theme Park MMOs.

Build and Control:

You can also build and control outposts, points of interest (ie. Watch Towers, Forts, Farms, Taverns, etc), settlements, kingdoms and possibly even an empire!

All of these have costs to build, functions to control, costs to maintain, and they can all be taken away or destroyed by others. Second only to your character being the content of the game, this aspect of the game in the big part of player interaction. Need I say it again? You don't find this in your typical Theme Park MMO.

I'm not telling you that you can find some of these in other games. But, with PFO you will have the opportunity to crowd forge (shape) the direction that the game is going in now.

*nods appreciatively at Bluddwolf's efforts to evangelize for PFO*

Mortal Online. No sexual content but there is National Geographic level nudity. Characters are just default naked when you remove their clothes. Everything else I listed is clean in that regard.

Thanks :) (we don't get national geographic, so I think he'll have to give mortal a miss :P)

@Bluddwolf, oh I don't have to try and sell him on PFO, he's already upset with me that I didn't inform him of the kickstarter when it started since he'll now miss the first months of release :P, he's ALREADY frothing at the mouth for PFO from everything I told him :P (well, not literally, I'd be very worried if he was literally frothing at the mouth :P). I'm just trying to find him something to tide him over until it releases.
