No advice this month; I’m going to be participating in NaNoWriMo again this year (http://nanowrimo.org/participants/jschoonover) and need all my ideas ready to go for the next month of babbling. But I’ll try to have something for December. Maybe a quickie on Krampus….
Actually, I do have some advice. If you want to work as a writer/editor, there are two ways to go about doing it: carefully and carelessly. Careful people pick their jobs, budget their time, and get paid what they’re worth. They are working.
Then there’s me. I work jobs with little pay, throw my hat out into every arena, and make a part-time salary for full-time work. I wouldn’t call it working.
Why would I do that? Because I LOVE what I do. I love throwing work in as a volunteer. I love offering my editing/writing services to the people who don’t have the money. I like being a nice guy.
I augment with other jobs. I’m finally paying off the last of my college loans after 17 years. Not exactly what was planned, but I did get a job in my chosen field, so that says something.
I’ve had a lot of fun and I’ve helped a lot of people. I can’t say I regret my choice.
