Ah, oops. I missed the fact that you were staying too. Yeah, Dravite should take the watch between Lo'j and Elisile.

I was thinking we brought the Small-sized goblin loot to town to sell it as well. That is:

- Ripnugget: chainmail*
- Manic: battleaxe*, chain shirt*, light shield*
- Weasly: dogslicer, shortbow*
- Squat: half plate*, greataxe*
- Gruesome: dogslicer, heavy crossbow
- Alwyn's old MW greatsword

We ID and sell these, then bring the money back to Thistletop. I was thinking of getting a couple of potions and some holy water. Anyone else need any minor items?

I think you are presuming on my good auspices that you can swan about selling treasure and buying up equipment before strolling back to Thistletop and rubbing out whatever sort of beasties you think still remain. Maybe after a spot of tiffin. You have left your colleagues there in an unexplored dungeon and while they should be OK, a bit of urgency is probably appropriate. Also, the person who can Identify this stuff is in Thistletop - there are other mages about, but they might be pushed to Identify everything in the timeframe you have.

Oh, and guys - spoilers, please for in-character stuff.

That's fine - we'll just store it in a safe place. Can we put it in something akin to a bank lockbox?

I have enough for what I wanted anyway. Here's my shopping list:

Spoiler:

6 potions of protection from evil (300 gp)
6 oils of magic weapon (300 gp)
4 jugs of alchemist's fire (60 gp)
silver dagger (22 gp)

Larken:

Spoiler:
Father Zanthus looks somewhat surprised at the Varisian vagabond's request, but he takes it in his stride. "Well, we cater to a number of religions, but I myself am a follower of Desna. I have a copy of the Seven Scrolls if you would like to start those, but they can be a little confusing to the uninitiated - they contain a number of rather confusing tenets which can cause debate among the faithful. But you strike me as a possible Desnan, with your Varisian heritage and previous wanderings. Alternatively, we have shrines to Abadar, Sarenrae, Shelyn, Gozreh, and Erastil too - one of the acolytes will be happy to help you if you aske them."

There's a write-up of Desna in PF2, Abadar in PF8 (I doubt he is Larken's bag, though) or alternatively there are details of the others in the Gazeteer if you have it.

You can keep it safe in the council house safe.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Excellent. I changed my spell suite a bit to tune up for demon-fighting.

Stayers:

Spoiler:

Elisile slips into deep reverie for the first part of the watches, until Dravite wakes her. Feeling refreshed, she spends her watch mainly investigating the door and the column, although she keeps an ear out for sounds of danger.

Takes 20 on search checks on door and column for 29. Listen check: 12+6 = 18. Will cast detect magic on the door and column also and try to analyse the auras.

Assuming the night passes without danger, she will prepare new spells in the morning.

Spoiler:

Davos decides to return to Sandpoint with Aylmora and the others. While in the temple, Davos says to Larken, "I will remain by her side until we return to Thistletop. I will return and help to ensure that what ever foul beast is improsioned below the earth remains so. After that however, I must return with her to Magnimar. I must report to my temple and the best hope for Aylmora's recovery lies there."

Davos is planning to spend any down time working towards Aylmora's recovery, wether by working off a debt to a healer, or reasearching darker, less well known powers. I wonder how binders and vestiges fit into Golarion?

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Not much downtime, really - just a night in a decent bed, before going back to Thistletop.

Alwyn Agnarrson wrote:

I meant before we start The Skinsaw Murders.

The stayers:

Spoiler:
It is an odd, disqueting night.

After the combat, the discovery of the tortured prisoner and the casual cruelty of the demented Nualia and her allies, the otherworldly hounds and the ancient complex under the goblin den, Dravite's near-death experience...

... it is hardly surprising that no one sleeps well or feels relaxed while keeping watch over Thistletop. Nobody feels like talking, and a sullen dread falls over the group, left isolated as their colleagues returned for a more comfortable night in Sandpoint.

But there is more to it than that. Particularly in the deeper levels of the complex, there is an undefinable, almost palpable wrongness about the place. It seems like there is something lurking within the halls, hiding, stalking, waiting, not quite visible from the corner of the eye. Something ancient and implacably hostile. No one who lingers below on their guard shift is reluctant to leave once their replacement arrives.

Above ground the surf pounds implacably on the cliffs, an oppressively impersonal force that cares nothing for the hopes and aspirations of puny mortals, a force that will outlive everyone and everything, and that will grind the works of man, dwarf and elf to dust without even acknowledging they were ever there. The only puctuation is the occasional booming roar from whatever lurks in the sea caves beneath the sacrificial hole amongst the briars on the mainland.

Needless to say, everyone is very grateful when the dawn finally peeks over the forest to banish the night fears for another day.

Ah, twas a lov'ly night, aye? I be wishin' we 'ad the power ta be droppin' de whole place inta de sea! Tis a polluted vein is what it be!

The stayers and the goers:

Rummaging around the stuff on the shelves where the final battle with Nualia and her followers took place reveals her journal. It is a long read, not just in length but also difficult with the insane ramblings, veneration of demonic gods, bitter diatribes and the general hatred she displays to virtually all things connected with civilisation and its works. However, the gist can be pieced together after a read of a few hours.

Nualia long felt bitter and isolated due to her unearthly looks, and had no friends in Sandpoint. In addition, her adoptive father, Father Tobyn, the previous priest at the temple, was very strict and allowed her little freedom. So when she caught the eye of a roving Varisian youth, Delek, the naïve and lonely Nualia was easily seduced. They would meet and tryst in the caves by the beach beneath Sandpoint, and there she conceived a child. Once Delek found out he was to become a father, he did the only responsible thing and fled Sandpoint, never to return. And her father, on discovering his daughter was pregnant, furiously forbade her from leaving the temple to prevent embarrassment to her and, more pertinently, him.

However, as she only realised later, these caves led to a temple of Lamashtu that had lain hidden for millennia, and the mother of monsters blessed Nualia and her child. After seven months, her monstrous spawn was still-born, too horrific to live. With the double shock of losing her child and birthing a fiend, Nualia fell into a coma. There, Lamashtu fed her dreams and poisoned her already unstable mind.

On the night of the temple fire, Nualia awoke from her stupour in great wrath, her humanity shredded by contact with the evil of Lamashtu’s whisperings. She jammed the door of her father’s bedroom and set fire to the temple, fleeing her hated home for Magnimar. There she fell in with a cult of murderers called the Skinsaw Men, and with them she tracked down Delek and extracted a horrific revenge (his sacrificial murder is related in loving detail). But her hunger for vengeance remained unassuaged – Sandpoint and its citizens needed to die too.

The Skinsaw Men gave Nualia a medallion emblazoned with a seven-pointed star, called a Sihedron medallion. They explained that it was symbolic of both ancient times and of things to come, and that she had a part to play in the coming new order. Led by the words of the Skinsaw Men and the visions of Lamashtu, she returned to Sandpoint and found the ancient catacombs under the town. There she remained for months, under the tutelage of the quasit Erylium, until Lamashtu gifted her with the knowledge of a powerful fiend trapped beneath the goblin lair at Thistletop named Malfeshnekor. Freeing the fiend and razing Sandpoint would be sufficient sacrifice for Nualia to shed her hated human form and truly become one of Lamashtu’s children.

Larken and Davos:

Spoiler:
Father Zanthus shakes his head sadly at Aylmora’s pitiful state. “I fear there is little we can do for her here. But there may be more powerful cures for her in Magnimar than there are in our little town. I will write a letter of introduction for you to some acquaintances of mine there – I don’t doubt that they can help.”

The goers:

Spoiler:
After the debrief, attended by the town council and a press of concerned townsfolk all packed into the room, an uneasy night follows. While they are doubtless more comfortable than those left behind at Thistletop, the group are acutely aware of their friends left behind to guard the site and its unknown dangers. No one sleeps well, and they are all awake early, ready to head back to the erstwhile goblin lair.

Leaving behind the excited children and the relieved townsfolk of Sandpoint, they head back up the road before hacking their way through the Nettlewood. It is midmorning by the time they get back to Thistletop to be greeted by their compatriots. They seem unharmed but weary – Thistletop is an uneasy place to spend the night.

The stayers:

Spoiler:
It is midmorning when the guard on duty by the gate hears a cry – a hail from the returning party members. It is with some relief that the group is reunited to explore the deeper segments of the dungeons beneath the island.

OK, back together again – spoilers can end.

Also, there was a magical bastard sword and an enchanted breastplate on Nualia, and the armoured dude wore magic banded mail. Alwyn wants the magic banded mail - at least for now. I can guess who wants the sword. But who wants the breastplate?

After preparing her spells for the day (updated in her profile) Elisile will cast Read Magic on herself and peruse Lyrie’s scrolls, seeking any spells that may be useful.

When the others arrive, she addresses the group. “We must be cautious in our actions here today; it appears that this fiend is locked away, we must see that we do not release it unless we are very sure that we can defeat it. It would be … unfortunate if we were to set it loose and be unable to destroy it. Do we, as a group, feel up to that task? I feel that this creature is likely much more powerful than the demon we faced below Sandpoint.

“If we are determined to proceed, I have some spells that may help. Hudak of the Shoanti, I can enlarge your form again if you wish it. I can cast a spell that protects somewhat against evil on one of you, and enchant someone’s weapon. Who wishes to benefit from these magics?”

Just before they set about seeing how to open the door, Elisile will cast Mage Armour on herself from her scroll. Just before the door opens she will begin casting various spells on herself and others who may want them.

Hang about, I missed Alwyn’s loot from town earlier. Did he bring a potion of Prot from Evil and an Oil of Magic weapon for everyone? Like 9 of each??

Elisile will take one of the Alchemist’s Fire flasks (between those and Vethran’s scorching rays, lets hope this fiend doesn’t have fire resistance or immunity…)

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Six of each - that's one potion and one oil for each except me (I had my own already) and Vethran (who doesn't really need them).

Aw, crap - I forgot Davos. Silly me. I guess that means that one more perty member gets no potions. Sorry, y'all.

Since Elisile has both of those prepared as spells, she can give up hers to Davos if needs be.

The protection from evil would be handy, I won't say no to +2 AC and saves vs. evil crap, but yeah, I don't really need the magic weapon.

OK - as ever - what's the plan?

Male Dwarf Ranger/7 XP- 35674

Ach! We be needin' a plan laddies. How are we ta be tacklin' dis sitch-i-ation?

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

Assuming we want to proceed …
Elisile will cast detect magic in the chamber with the door and the pillar, looking for magical auras. Then I suggest Larken search the door and pillar for traps (possibly with some Aid Another rolls) and try to determine if the door is locked.
I suspect that putting a coin into the slot in the pillar will open the door (although why Nualia didn’t do that I don’t know – maybe she didn’t find the slot?).
As we are getting ready to open the door (either by putting a coin in the slot, picking the lock, forcing the door or whatever) Elisile will start casting buff spells.
Round -4 Enlarge person on Hudak if he wants it
Round -3 Protection from Evil on Veth if he wants it
Round -2 Protection from Evil on herself
Round -1 Magic Weapon on her bow.
Meanwhile others can be drinking potions etc.
Also Aubrey, what did spells did Elisile find on the scrolls?

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

I'll take the enlarge; I dig it the most.
I'll try this magic bastard sword out unidentified maybe.

"I want to see what this snickersnack can do..."

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Alwyn puts on Orik's magic banded mail. Perhaps Davos should take Nualia's breastplate? Just before we put a coin in the slot, Alwyn casts Bull's strength on Dravite. Then we roll!

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

does it got's breasts? heh heh...

male Human Rogue 3 / Fighter 1

Since there doesn't seem to be any pressing time concerns, Larken gives the door and the column his most thorough examination before even checking to see if the door is locked.
Search for traps on column then door, taking 20 on both: 29
If he finds a trap:
Disarm traps, door: 13r +11 = 24
Disarm traps, column: 14r +11 =25

If locks need disabled, and the traps don't kill him, Larken then takes 20 on any open locks checks for a total of 29

This line made me laugh for five minutes...think positive, dude! Dayum!

;)

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Oh, sorry, Aubrey; think "positively." I'm a little hungover...

I've updated my spell list. The new list is in my profile.

At the first sign of combat, Davos will begin casting the following spells in this order.

Protection from Evil
Shield of Faith
Bless Weapon

He'll lead into combat with Spiritual Weapon, then back up Hudak and Dravite in melee ready with healing should they need it.

BTW, can someone remind me how much XP we are supposed to have. I've got 6750 in my profile, but I don't think that's right.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Take it down to 5410.

Hudak wrote:

Indeed - never forget your adverbs!

Larken prods and pokes at the door and coin slot. Both seem to be clear of traps as far as he can tell.

Hudak wrote:

Of course - how do you think she fitted into it?

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

OK - Hudak's got the magical bastard sword, Alwyn's borrowing the enchanted banded mail, everybody's drunk/applied their potions and oils, Elisile's cast he spells and Dravite's got Bull's strength from Alwyn. Anything else?

"This had better be good", Alwyn mutters, before slotting a gold piece into the gilded column.

Music of course! I'll keep it as regular music for now. I'll charge it up with Inspirational Boost as a swift action if a threat presents itself.

There is a click and then a loud grinding sound as the pillar rumbles down into the floor, revealing a short corridor running north-south. Double doors are at the north and south ends of the passage and in the middle of the east wall. The air here is dry and stale, and a thin coating of undisturbed dust coats every surface.

Do any of the doors distinguish themselves from the others in any way? Or are they all identical in appearance?
