Does anyone know of any examples of molds or fungi native to badlands or places like the great plains? I'm looking for inspiration for one of my current gaming groups and I'm trying to pull some real life examples of molds and fungi in those kinds of environments to help me find the right plants for the job and flavor them to something that already exists in that biome.

That depends greatly on climate, but most boreal/subarctic badlands will features many types of lichens, which are composed of an interesting symbiotic algea/fungus combination.
From wikipedia :"Lichens (...) thrive in places where higher plants have difficulty growing. Lichens are often the first to settle in places lacking soil, (...) in the tough conditions of deserts, and others on frozen soil of the Arctic regions."
I don't know of any published lichen creatures, but one could easily imagine life-draining (or blood draining, magic draining) varieties.
