Don't you love it when School Teachers think they can Teach any old rubbish...?

1. Reenact Slavery

We did something sort of like that in 6th grade, though far friendlier. It was a re-enactment of the Underground Railroad, with us as escaped slaves being lead through a forest to a few "checkpoints." Very cool exercise, and nowhere near as harsh as the one you linked to by the sounds of it. To put it another way, I understand what they were going for, but they clearly went too far.

could be worse. they could be telling kids it really was a states rights thing.

States rights: the war cry of those who have run out of all other explanations for why they want to treat their fellow man like crap.

Sovereign Court

Teachers often do this with a variation.

For example, UK schools often have 'houses' for inter-school sports and other competions. So, people in House X get to lord it over House Y to discover how demeaning/seductive such arbitrary power imbalances can be.

I'd say this was done in pretty poor taste (gone too far, too near to the knuckle) but I imagine that most people expect teachers to deal with ethics and the terrible reality of historical injustice.

And yet it is so.
