Paying to play RPGs

Gamer Life General Discussion

I might be moving to a new town of about 30,000. I haven't yet found an RPG presence on the web.

I am thinking about starting up a RPG club and offering PFACG, BB for beginners and regular Pathfinder RPG (perhaps as PFS, perhaps as APs, perhaps as Homebrew).

How much would you pay to play once a fortnight from around 7pm till late?

I'm looking for any ideas to help me actually achieve this.

30k and no RPG presence is hard to believe. Have you checked meetup.com?

I would need to know more about what I am paying for before I could really comment.

Chips and a 12 pack of favorable drink.

Likewise. Pitching in for snacks is fine -- entrance fees, no.

I should have mentioned that it is a remote and rural location - 560 km from Melbourne, 1000 km from Sydney.

I'd be targeting new players, probably high school and university students with the expectation that I would be teaching them how to play and initially providing everything.

I was thinking of $10 entry to help cover the cost of 'providing everything', which would then include some soft-drinks and snacks and hire of a hall.

That would put you about the mildura/Swan Hill area correct?

My advice would be to find the FLGS and branch out from there. If no traditional game store exists then head to the local library and look around and put up signage.

Yes, Mildura - well done A Ninja! 50 points to you.

That was my plan (FLGS & library), though I don't expect to find a FLGS. I will also approach the high school and university campus. I am a high school teacher and have enjoyed the experience of teaching teenagers the thrill of RPG gaming.

I've always wondered if people payed for RPG games, i don't think its that bad of an idea really if you were paying for a private, comfortable location where you could have cold temporary storage (an open fridge) and possibly specialized furniture for gaming (like a projector table, special rpg tables ect). But i would also expect a number of other goodies to come along with it like a library of miniature, battle maps, and scenario rentals to go with it. If you had all of that i wouldn't mind paying $10-30 a month, obviously the higher the cost the better the snacks and wider the libraries would have to be.

Thanks VDZ, that's a good idea.
I was thinking to buy all the pawns and maps and everything else needed to run RotRL. At $10 I would look into providing a can of soft drink and a pack of chips (pitching at students). Players need only bring additional drink and snacks.

How often is the fee? As a kid we had little disposable income so we used one set of books and graph paper. I know things are different these days with kids having smartphones and all but im not sure how many fish you will get with this bait. Do you have a place to play? Do you have to pay anything for it? I recommend you just eat a Bestiary box and a few flip mats and let the kids fill in their needs.
