You get out of sub-tier gold everytime you play a scenario at a sub-tier that your character doesn't match one of its levels.
If you play sub-tier 1-2, and your character is not level 1 or 2, you are out of sub-tier.
If you play sub-tier 3-4, and your character is not level 3 or 4, you are out of sub-tier.
If you play sub-tier 4-5, and your character is not level 4 or 5, you are out of sub-tier.
If you play sub-tier 5-6, and your character is not level 5 or 6, you are out of sub-tier.
If you play sub-tier 6-7, and your character is not level 6 or 7, you are out of sub-tier.
If you play sub-tier 7-8, and your character is not level 7 or 8, you are out of sub-tier.
If you play sub-tier 8-9, and your character is not level 8 0r 9, you are out of sub-tier.
If you play sub-tier 10-11, and your character is not level 10 or 11, you are out of sub-tier.
I think that covers it.

in the example above, it is important to note that a 2nd level PC would get a differant "out of sub-tier" gold amount than the 5th level PC.
The 5th gets the average of the 3-4 & 6-7 gold.
The 2nd would get the average of the 1-2 & 3-4 gold.
many people do not realize this.
For the 1-7 scenarios, you are correct. But since you can't play more than 1 sub-tier away from your level, it should be self-explanatory that you take the average of the two sub-tiers that you could play.
Level 5 cannot play sub-tier 1-2 in a Tier 1-7 scenario.
Level 2 cannot play sub-tier 6-7 in a Tier 1-7 scenario.
The only possible real confusion is if you are level 3 or 4, what do you get?
Well if you play sub-tier 1-2, you get the average of 1-2 and 3-4. And if you play sub-tier 6-7, you get the average of 3-4 and 6-7.

That's kinda weird, so if I have a Level 3 playing a Tier 1-5 Scenario (Subtiers 1-2 and 4-5) and he plays down to Subtier 1-2 he will get the Subtier 1-2 and 4-5 average? And if he played 4-5 he'd get the same thing?
Yes, if you're 3rd level in a 1-5, you get out of subtier gold no matter which subtier you play.
