So, everyone’s going back to school and so should your players’ characters. After all, a lot of things can happen in a schoolyard and most of them not pretty.

Formal schools where students are gathered together to hear a teacher talk about a subject have been around since ancient antiquity and most post-apocalyptic or futuristic settings assume that they will continue to exist thousands of years from now. Most emphasize knowledge of facts and figures, although some taught military tactics and exercises and others spent their time wondering about the existence of things. Particular schools of learning may have taught trades and crafts, although generally in the past this was achieved through an apprentice program.

In most roleplaying games of a fantasy nature, it is generally provided that there are schools of magic from which to learn, and often in larger cities there are academies or universities from which to obtain more generic knowledge. Being a fantasy world, there is no reason why you couldn’t have schools similar to those colleges of modern day, and then ensure that they need the PCs to solve one problem or another. More importantly, the school may not be able to pay in monetary units, but could offer education as a reward.

Some possible scenarios? A teacher is suspected of corrupting students and using their souls to appease her own demons, but evidence is slim. Perhaps the characters could pretend to be new students to learn the truth? Or a professor in philosophy is found dead on the school grounds and a wild bear is blamed. The characters are sent to eliminate the threat but learn that there may be more going on than a random wild animal attack. Maybe the wealthy son of a diplomat insisted on entering a local public university to learn a trade and is now missing….

While you’re pondering the appeal of school bells in your campaign, check out this new stuff from Avalon Games.

Nova Roma, Innsmouth Prison
AVG4100-NR-0-1
36 Pages
$5.99
Writer: Charles Smith

Carcer Maximus Innsmouth, more commonly known as Innsmouth Superprison, is the highest concentration of evil in one location in the entire world. Its mere presence throws off tarot readings for miles around. The inmates are as ingenious as they are evil—making mutagens out of cleaning fluids and turning everything they can pry off the walls into makeshift ray-guns. The administration is able to maintain some vestigial semblance of control only by being more evil and insane than the prisoners. This leaves anyone sane caught between a rock and a jagged whirling place.

Innsmouth Superprison is a detailed look at the most notorious prison in the Nova Roma setting. This book contains information on the prison itself, the staff, inmates, and gangs of Innsmouth, as well as the many special security measures (and how to defeat them).

The one good thing about introducing a school to a group of players is that it’s a familiar setting to nearly anyone over the age of 10, so it unifies the group image of the setting. Take it and run with it!
