Are Roc's a viable companion in pathfinder society and if so is the bestiary the only needed source or is there another needed book?

They are allowed for Druids, I believe. Not for Rangers. Whatever book they appear in is the one you need.

I know they appear in bestiary as a monster, I'm not sure if their "druid companion stats" are in there since I don't own the book myself

Roc Companion stats are in the first Bestiary book. I believe they are legal options for druids only.

okay cool thanks ^_^

I don't have access to the books at the moment, only pfsrd (which makes no distinction between what a Ranger and a Druid can choose). Is a Ranger getting a limited list animals RAW or is that a PFS thing?

The ranger only has a specific list of animals, and the Roc isn't on that list, so that's a RAW thing not just PFS.

There is some flavor text mentioning rangers and druids with Roc companions, but other than the Beastmaster Archetype or GM fiat, there isn't actually any way for Rangers to acquire them as Animal Companions.

I can't find the "no ranger" thing anywhere either though I'm not looking for it as I'm going druid

Ranger's only have a very specific list of the animal companions they have access to, unlike the druid who just gets all animal companions. Unless an Animal COmpanion's entry specifically says it is added to the Ranger's list, the Ranger does not gain access to it.

A ranger who selects an animal companion can choose from the following list: badger, bird, camel, cat (small), dire rat, dog, horse, pony, snake (viper or constrictor), or wolf.

I did not know their list was limited, good to keep in mind for my next ranger

Ah ok. I always use d20pfsrd which just directs to a page of all the druid options. Thanks for pointing that out, though I have to say I find the restriction to be pretty stupid.

Yeah, I think the biggest problem with classes having limited lists like that, is that when authors introduce new creatures they have to specifically remember to either permit them to every class with a limited list, or only classes with the full druid list get them.

And d20pfsrd uses small numbers (1,2,3,or4) as hypertext (I think it's called) that denotes who can choose what - Rangers can select animals marked 1, Cavaliers are 2 etc. etc.

The explanation of the numbers is at the bottom of the list - it is in fine print, both literally and figuratively and easy to miss...
