After joining PFS and seeing the faction rules I instantly fell in love with the idea of factions, since it gives your character an auto background concept and goals.
But the kind of faction I would have liked to play didn't exist. It would look something like this:
------------------------------
Stargazers
The Stargazers are a group of scholars, magicians, priests, and free-thinkers who come from all over the world. The Stargazers exist informally as an organization, whose existence is kept secret from the general public and contacts are kept on a personal level. The Stargazers work together because they share a common belief: that something is wrong with the world.
The fall of Aroden, the growth of the Worldwound, the Eye of Abendego, the rise of diabolism in Cheliax - these are all seen by the Stargazers as signs that the world is somehow on the wrong path, and may be headed for disaster. Is Golarion headed for doomsday? Though they cannot say for certain many Stargazers believe this, while others believe that though there may not be a specific Armageddon the various trends at work have the potential to bring it about if left unchecked.
The Stargazers thus work to understand these trends, and if possible mitigate or reverse them. Surely Golarion is doomed if the Worldwound cannot be closed? Surely it is not mankind's destiny to be the slaves of devils? The Stargazers hope that through investigation and the sharing of information, solutions to these perilous dilemmas can be found.
The de facto leader of the Stargazers is Magister Skaeos Varatarkos, a Taldoran scholar specializing in astronomy who lives in Absalom where he operates an observatory. He teaches at the university and tutors many wealthy students, and his tutorials are often a cover for clandestine meetings of the Stargazers.
