Rules for purchasing magical items in cities

Homebrew and House Rules

OK, so after six months of my players camping out on Smuggler's Shiv in the Serpent's Skull AP, they will soon be getting to Eleder. This means I had to familiarize myself with the City Statblock and how this relates to magical items.

I understand that items costing the stated amount has a 75 % chance of being available without too much work, and that I need to roll up x numbers of items in addition.

1. For the low-cost items, should the PC's roll something else than percentile dice? Diplomacy or something for finding out where to buy these things? I'm inclined to let the PC's have an easy enough time finding this, at least in game time.

2. For the other items, is there a master list out there with a table containing all (or at least more) than the magic items from the PHB?

For item 2, this site may help.

Some things have been renamed to conform with the OGL license (removing Golarion-specific words) but they're easy to track down.

My recommendation it to try and handle the "who gets what, where" via email/OOG, otherwise you can spend hours playing Bankers & Merchants, then fixing character sheets, before you play.

Low-level potions and scrolls shouldn't even be a question.

But do any of your players want/need specialty items?

I only know the gnome wants a small sized magical crossbow. Doing it by email sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure if everything (except potions and scrolls) should be available over the counter, and that something has to be created first.

For the list, I just want some variety from the PHB. I remember in 2nd edition, I loved the big magic item encyclopedias.

Well, I don't know the AP or the town or the levels of the characters. Not EVERYTHING should be available. I'd ignore the % of finding an item and maybe use some as plot hooks, and make some no-brainers.

Potions of healing & such should be readily available, as well as scrolls levels 1-4 for clerical (cure disease, remove poison) and 1-3 for arcane.

If they're getting custom work done, remember it's 1 day/1000 gp value.

Any crafters in your player group?
