Homebrew metal spells

Homebrew and House Rules

I'm playing a Gorum worshipping wizard and I want to design some metal themed spells. I'd appreciate some balance feedback.

Shrapnel Bolt
school: Conjuration (creation) [pain, metal]
Level: sorcerer/wizard 3, cleric(Gorum) 3
Casting time: 1 Standard action
Components: V S
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: 1 Metal shard
Duration: instantaneous, then 1 round / level
Saving throw: Reflex half (see text)
Spell Resistance: no

Description
You launch a jagged metal shard at a foe which then shatters into hundreds of metal fragments.

Choose a target square in range of this spell. This spell effects targets in a 20 ft cone that originates in the target square (The target square is part of the cone). If there is a creature in the targeted square, you may make a touch attack against it. If you hit, that creature does not get a save against this spell. If you crit, it takes double damage and is stunned for one round.

In either case, targets of this spell take 1d8 slashing/piercing damage per 2 caster levels and are treated as entangled for 1 round per level as the crippling pain from the fragments slows their movement.

What do you think. Too weak? Too stong? I want to add some ability to use a weapon as a focus to increase the chance to hit. Would that be too much?

It doubles the already doubled crit damage? I think that's a bit weird. It also doesn't have a dice cap, a 3 level spell should cap. I also think its better than fireball in damage and utility. This either needs to be toned down or increased to 5th level.

Edit: look at stone call and similar spells, they don't scale for good reason.

Oops, forgot the damage cap. It would be capped at 5d8. Its less damage than fireball since 1d8 per 2 levels is less than 2d6.

A 3rd level spell, that does damage, stuns AND Entangles? Sounds too powerful.

That said, The stun and Entangle only last 1 round and are coterminious (I would suggest that the stunning is almost superfluous given that they are already entangled. Almost.), and the damage is not too great if it caps at 5d8, though it can get doubled to 5d8 x 2. Have not looked at compared to other spells, but as written, I would not take it for damage unless I could improve my chances of a crit and I would be looking for better control If I wanted the Entangle/Stun option. A better spell would be one that fired metal chains that entangle.

Also (and I may be being picky here), your RAW suggests that you...

Quote:

Although it does mention that it affects creatures in a cone emanating from the target square, it does not mention what that effect is. Obviously RAI it is the same affect as the target square, but it's description needs to be tidied up to make that clear.

The combat length entangle is rough, if it was just 1 round I think I could see this as a powerful lvl 3 spell. Intensify spells existence is being considered with this spells strength.

@Gavmania
The entangle is rounds/level. The stun is for one round only on a critical hit against the primary target

The idea is that there is a primary target, and then a cone burst behind him. Everyone is struck by metal fragments and suffer from hamstrings and other similar injuries.

@GeneticDrift
The druid's Entangle is also combat length, and that's level 1 :)

I based the choise of level 3 on Ice spears. That spell does full damage, trips and gives cover.

I don't see how Intensified spell helps. It just gives you 2 more d8 at level 14.

Also, my spell does physical damage, which makes it less useful against DR.
