Hey, so I was reading through Magnimar, City of Monuments when I noticed the Lord-Mayor's menagerie entry mentioned a rather familiar gorilla—Mandali.
Now, I know it is unwise to ask such questions of the fabulously wealthy, but why is Mandali, Sheila Hydemarch's longtime friend, living in a glorified zoo? I certainly hope this situation was done at Mandali's benefit, I'd hate to see what would happen if Sheila discovered her boon companion was languishing in some noble's gilded cage.

I'm not sure if this is canon or just how I ran it in my game, but when my players visited the Menagerie, I narrated him as basically having run of the place. So, he wandered around acting as the face of the zoo and he'd let children (and gnomes) stand in his hands, raising them to see the Menagerie from above.
What is canon, though, is that Sheila and her husband run the zoo for the Lord Mayor. So if Mendali's being mistreated, it's entirely on them... which seems utterly out of character, so I'll happily assume he's retired there to be near his friends and is having the time of his life.
In my Shattered Star campaign, "Prince" Mandali is Sheila's intimidating bodyguard. Some unkind gossips in the city have made allusions to their close companionship being more than just friends. The scandal!
Vicious!
Cheers!

In my Rise of the Runelords game, Mandali is the dilligent, urbane, and witty majordomo of Heidmarch Manor, and speaks with an aristocratic Chelish accent. He wears a purple frock coat and a monocle.
He's an awakened gorilla, with class levels. (I haven't fully statted him, but I perceive him as a ranger/expert, probably with a total of about 8 HD).
Just don't get him angry. He's a very dangerous opponent.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of this. I've statted a few concepts for the big guy, but haven't decided yet. My players LOVE the big M, even bristling when a guest dismissively asked for a 'sapient' servant when he introduced himself.
