Tian-Sing people

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Between the cultural descriptions and the example names of the various Tian peoples given at the beginning of the Dragon Empires Gazetteer, I'm able to get a rough analogy for each to an Earth culture, which is helpful at least as far as naming characters goes. (Dan names sound Vietnamese, Dtang names are Cambodian, Hwan names sound Korean, La are Mongolian, Min are Japanese, Shu are han.)

But I can't get a handle on the Sing. The description is making me think of Hmong or Maori, or maybe Polynesian or even Malay. The names though don't really seem to fit anywhere. They seem somewhat similar to Nepali, but aren't as close in tone as the others are.

I think it's like Indonesia at least as a starting point...
Samsarans and the nation of Zi Ha are supposedly the (non-human) Tibet analogs...

Scarab Sages

Yep, Indonesia. At least I recognise some of the example names as Indonesian.

The Wandering Isles (where the Sing people live) also lists Wayang as a signifigant language,
Wayang being the shadow humanoids whose visual appearance certainly seems appropriate to SE Asia.

Sounds good to me then, I was just putzing around with Google to to confirm my assumptions about the others but didn't find anything with enough clear examples for Indonesian names.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, the Tian-Shing represent the peoples of southeast Asia: Indonesians, Malaysians and Filipinos.
