Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition Question - Xanesha + Nualia

Rise of the Runelords

Dark Archive

hello,

I'm running the ROTRL Anniversary edition for a group of 5 using a 30pt stat buy (so I can play a bit rougher & have fewer magic items), but I wanna make sure I'm not gonna overwhelm them too much by a possible encounter of Xanesha & Nualia at the same time.

At the end of Burnt Offerings, Nualia was captured, tried by Justice Ironbriar, and then taken back to Magnimar to the Hells Prison. I know 100% for sure that Nualia is not going to be locked away, but I'm still deliberating the direction to head with her.

Option 1: Pass Nualia along so she turns back up later (and more buffed up). I was thinking possibly as the Champion of Greed.

Option 2: Nualia hasn't had a chance to be passed along to somewhere else, and so is cooling her heels with Xanesha when the party catches up. But would that be too much of a fight?

Thanks for any and all feed back!

I would offer up another option: have her make her reappearance during the stone giant raid on Sandpoint in Chapter 4.

Naulia's beef is, and always has been, with the people of Sandpoint. She wants to pay them back for the way they mistreated her when she was young. That hatred is what drives her in Chapter 1. Having her get bumped along to Mokmurian, who (impressed with her abilities), puts her in charge of the invasion of Sandpoint (allowing Teraktinus to complete his mission a bit more stealthily).

This gives the PCs one more chance to tangle with her and gives her another chance at destroying Sandpoint and its citizens.

Xanesha is fairly tough. And having her that soon after first fighting her could be a letdown. The best bet is to have her "advising" the giants... or even be in the City of Greed itself (but not as Champion of Greed - she's more a Wrath-girl than a Greed-girl!)

It could even be an interesting twist by having her want to work WITH the group in this case... because she's working for the Lady of Wrath and that's why she's here - to stop Karzoug so her Runelord patron will awaken first.

I agree with Skeld. Let the PCs hear rumors of someone who matched her description in Turtleback Ferry, in Book 3, but don't let them meet her there. Instead, she's the military advisor to the giants attacking Sandpoint in Book 4.

Right. She could get a mention in Barl's note (not by name, of course). She's a natural choice of advisor to the Sandpoint raid because she lived there and she's interested in seeing the town suffer.

Or you could always have her sneak back in to the Catacombs of Rage and receive further tutelage from the Scribbler - who like Nualia is an adherent of Lamashtu -and covertly corrupt a few Sandpointers as well.

I always liked Shaelis Vinder as a potential baddie ... Controlling father, rejected or used by so-called heroes, possible witness to dismembered sister, even more controlling father ... If that's not a good intro for becoming a sorceress or a witch and an opening for Lamashtu, and/or enough to make her a target for the post-giant attack "explosion" of the rage runewell under Sandpoint I don't know what is!

Seems a shame to have her condemned to "girlfriend" or flunky NPC status as often seems to be the case ...

Or in the case of my game, accusing the oblivious guy of being gay (the townsfolk didn't blink an eye) and then having her clothes cut off of her stealthily by the NPC thief. =^-^=

Yeah. I think having Shaelis end up a subversive villainess would be a most enjoyable twist. ^^

Why would Nualia be champion of greed when her principal sin is her Wrath against Sandpoint? What will you do to change the character to get her to follow Greed?

I really like this idea because it gives both of them what they need.

  • Scribbler needs a reliable, mobile agent.
  • Nualia needs help to continue her revenge on Sandpoint.

Building a small "cult" of the Mother of Monsters in the heart of Sandpoint would advance both of their goals.
