how would you do a Monastary in Kingmaker?

Kingmaker

one of my players wants to start a monastary for monks and I told him to have a library added if he wants it to hold the lands history but the building itself...how many build points should it be and what should it add to the kingdom?

use the numbers from the Temple building it should give you all the stats you need for the game and just role-play it as it were a monastery.

The building systems are far more flexible than most give them credit for.

Agreed a temple works best.

Its name is a guideline not what it is.

My players have a gambling hall(guildhall) and a very large zoo/fey preserve (entire district of parks built for this purpose).

Find the building that's bonuses and cost match what they players want and build.

G.ame's idea is very correct- there is no reason why you can't rename buildings.

However, if you want a more concrete answer, there are two versions of a Monastery for Kingmaker.

From Book of the River Nations:
Monastery (6 BP): A place for monks to gather and train.
Loyalty +1, Stability +1

From Wayfinder Issue 5:
Monastery (30 BP): A place of quiet meditation and study. Halves cost of Library;
Stability +2. (4 city blocks)

Take your pick.

River Nations is 3P though, so not strictly accepted in all campaigns.

True, Book of the River Nations is third party material and Wayfinder is fan-created, but both work rather well.

Scarab Sages

Have them pay for a fort and library, require it to be an open hex build, and grant the same bonuses as both separate items. They now have a resource of scholars to throw at problems requiring research.

And this one gets a dot.

We also use the BotRN Monastery for an Aldori school.

I allow composite buildings -

A small monastery (a priory) would probably be a Shrine and a Barracks a full blown abbey might be a Temple and a garrison. But then I am building a monastery for a priest dedicated to Iomedae.

If you want something more academic - use a Shrine, Barracks (for accommodation) and a Library. Charge them as three separate building - give the advantages of three separate buildings - then put a small wall around then (for free) and call them one big complex ....
