Boy Scouts of America Introduces Game Design Merit Badge

Where was this thing when I was in Boy Scouts, learning knots and first aid and all that other useless junk?! I would have jumped on this! Oh, well; enjoy, current scouts, enjoy...

Well, as an ex scout myself, I gotta say that learning first aid and knots and stuff has been an excellent investment and I've used pretty much all of those merit badge skills in my life.

But yeah, I'd have loved a game design merit badge myself. Unfortunately when I was a kid video games were not yet even a gleam in the eye of Sony...

It's not necessarily common knowledge that game design is still in its infancy as a field. It's heartening to see the BSA opening it up to members as an area they consider worth studying.

There are other areas I'd like to see them open up to as well, but those deserve their own thread.

Agreed; the part of my post about knots and first aid being junk was hyperbole on my part. I still wish I'd had a game design badge to gun for, though.

Mr. Betts, I agree that the BSA could take a more progressive stance on certain topics, but at least they're making some moves toward leaving the Teddy Roosevelt mold it was founded under.

The Exchange

SI INTERCEPTION is more a game of chance than education.
