One of the most fun things I have always found in any game is the ability to explore. Playing WoW you received rewards for exploring new areas for your character, but even more fun for me was in WAR upon its first launch I was the first one on my server to explore the furthest part of the in game world. I did not receive anything special for it, but the idea of exploration and reporting back to people what I found was thrilling for me. It was not so much about killing things as seeing them.
Will players have the opportunity to "leave their mark" on a place? Will we be able to build a small shack in the middle of the forest and claim it as our own? (Until it falls apart or is burned down of course)

I think you'll definitely get that thrill in PFO.
From Cartography:
I would really like there to be a huge system for map manipulation. So rather than selling a map to another person, you'd sell them information that you've gathered and it would appear on their map. Your character's map would be a way of keeping a whole lot of information organized.

I'm not sure how much you've already read, so forgive me if I point you to old news. If you haven't already, I recommend you read Player-Created Buildings and Structures.

You'll definitely be able to "leave your mark" by building Watchtowers, Inns, Forts, Hideouts, etc. However, they'll only be possible in pre-determined locations.
