Wands of CLW for lvl 1 Rangers / Pallys

Tonight we were playing a PFS game and a friend of mine told me that there was a note in the society field guide that changed how wands work so that a 1st level Paladin or Ranger for example cannot use a wand of cure light wounds.

Is that true, and if some, could someone link me the relevant text? I was under the assumption that they functioned as they do in the CRB, where a class can activate a wand as long as they have the spell on their list, even if they can't cast the spell yet.

Your friend is wrong; 1st level rangers can use wands of CLW. Did he not offer to point out the relevant text?

It was late as we were wrapping up after the game. I thought it was weird; he's normally pretty good on the rules. I'll have to talk to him next time I see him.

Thanks - it'd be good to know if there is any confusing/contradictory text out there on this topic.

Hopefully, your friend was thinking about the effect of the Ranger and Paladin archetypes that swap out spellcastng for something else. Those Rangers and Paladins cannot use a Wand of CLW.

I originally put in ever, but that is incorrect. They could use a wand of CLW if they multi-class into a class that retains spellcasting and has CLW on their spell list (Bard, Cleric, Druid, Witch, Oracle, etc.) or if they train UMD.

It's already solved, but...

Appropriate Link.

Spell trigger items can be used by anyone whose class can cast the corresponding spell. This is the case even for a character who can't actually cast spells, such as a 3rd-level paladin.

Note that of course the exception is if you have an archetype that completely gives up spellcasting (such as Stonelord Paladin) then you cannot use spell trigger items.

Unless you either train UMD, or multi-class into another class that has spellcasting and the spell involved on its list.

Perhaps they had the rules for a paladin using a wand of lesser restoration mixed up. Despite the spell being 1st level on the paladin's list, you have to purchase a wand as though it was a 2nd level spell.
