Liberty's Edge

Wotc is releasing the original 1974 book in November. The link: http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Product.aspx?x=dnd/products/dndacc/45390000

Enjoy!

Did you notice that the dice in the mock-up look an awful lot like Q-Workshop's dice for the Curse of the Crimson Throne AP?

This is nice, but with a price-point of $150, it's pretty steep, even if it does come with all four supplements as well.

I wonder if they remember that the Original Edition (from what I've heard) required the 1971 Chainmail to use?

It didn't require it. Chainmail was useful for large scale battles. You could use the Chainmail combat system or the "Alternative System" that came as part of OD&D for individual combat. It involved a 20 sided dice. The Chainmail system involved 2 six sided dice. We had been playing Chainmail for over 2 years when we picked up D&D in 1974, but we used the alternative system. They eventually replaced Chainmail with a miniature rules booklet specifically designed for D&D, called Swords and Spells. Nice rules. It (and Chainmail) evolved into the boxed set Battlesystem for 1E and then 2E Battlesystem book. Playable rules that accounted for all the AD&D specific stuff (classes, levels, spells, magic items etc.). Anyway the D&D alternative system became pretty much the default and we're still rolling those 20 siders today :)

*edit* Mind you a copy of Swords and Spells with it would have been nice and made the set more complete. The rules had some issues btw, but no more than original D&D. They all required some work. That was one of the things that made it fun.

One thing that popped into my mind just now (yes I am getting slower) was how useful the rules from Avalon Hill's bookcase game Outdoor Survival were. We had a copy along with about everything else Avalon Hill put out. Rules for hunger, thirst, overland travel and all that. In another companies game and suggested by name in D&D. Simpler days...

My understanding is that there are other parts of OD&D that refer to Chainmail, though. Things like initiative, morale, some of the spells and monster abilities, etc.

Not really. Mass combat was pretty much it. You could use the Chainmail skirmish combat rules or the alternative (d20) charts included in the game. The spells, monsters etc. were all taken care of in D&D, except for mass combat use. Now, Outdoor Survival saw some use. At least that's all I recall. Of course the last time I played OD&D was with all the supplements too (Greyhawk etc.) so I may be forgetting something.
