Is it legal to change your character name after you set it, even though it is still getting credit on the same character number?

Is this a PFS question?

You can definitely do it as part of a 1st level rebuild, as you can change any aspect of the character except its PFS number.

2nd level and above, I can't see that it makes any mechanical difference, so you should be able to start using a different name as any person can, though it isn't retconned and happens as an event in the character's life, if you think about such things.

The messageboard software allows you to change the name of an alias until a certain amount of activity is associated with it.

also you can pick a nickname something like

Done Jonhes, "the Aligator" or something like that... or tell your GM if you can change it because it don´t like you anymore!!
