Just started playing PFS recently and my group and I are just now finishing up the "First Steps" modules. My understanding is that the current PFS Season ends at GenCon. At that time, is everyone expected to roll brand new characters for the next season? Or are the seasons just to provide separation between stories/years?
My group only plays every other weekend, so by my calculations we are only going to make it to level 5 by GenCon. It seems sad to not get my Sorceress above level 5.

You can keep your character! The change in season reflects a shift in the overarching story and design direction of the campaign - it doesn't mean that you have to start from scratch.

this is the correct answer. Seasons have to do with metaplots that occur in that season's scenarios. For example, season 3's metaplot was getting ready for and participating in an asian-style martial arts tournament. Season 4 now we are discovering the ancient tombs of the Runelords of Thassilon, and so on.
Characters persist between seasons. You can play all the old seasons at anytime, all the way back to season 0 even. So no worries, take your time. There will be PLENTY to play at gencon with a level 5 character ;) Make sure not to miss the GenCon special!
