Jackie Robinson - A True Hero

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You might have seen today's Google Doodle (Jan 31). Today is the 94th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's birthday. If you're not familiar with him, Robinson was one of the greatest men of the 20th century. He (and Branch Rickey) profoundly changed America.

You can read a very short piece I wrote about him here. But you will be rewarded if you look into his life a little deeper.

Hmm. I can't remember the last time I saw a thread for a sports figure.

Nice blog.

Thanks. Robinson is my idol, so I think of him as much more than a sports figure (though, of course, he's also my favorite athlete).

Though it's a bit hollywoodized, I can't wait for April:

42 - The Movie

I'm looking forward to the movie as well. To deal with what he dealt with, with grace and dignity, and in addition to that, to excel at the sport he was playing? I can't even begin to imagine the strength of character the man must have had. There's a reason all 30 baseball clubs have retired his number.

I'm totally with you. They say that hitting a baseball is the hardest task in professional sports (I'm paraphrasing). For Jackie Robinson to have endured what he did and still make the Hall of Fame? Perhaps an unparalelled achievement.

Martin Luther King Jr said, "Jackie Robinson made it possible for me in the first place. Without him, I would never have been able to do what I did."

I'm not diminishing Branch Rickey's role, but Jackie Robinson was simply phenomenal.

There are quite a few good books about Robinson, but I particularly enjoyed this one.

In honor of spring training starting today, I'll link to the second trailer from 42, which opens in less than two months.

Less than six weeks until the movie opens!

RPGs are RPGs. And sports are sports. Etc, etc.

Jackie Robinson MATTERED. To see the impact of what he did had on a young black man who went on to pitch in the World Series, check out my blog entry aboutJackie and Joe Black.

Jackie's tombstone epitath is profound: A life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives.
