Vanities (fiction or functional)

Pathfinder Society

So through all the searches and reading i've done on the boards and elsewhere...

We are able to "purchase" things like: taverns, stores, ships, off shore islands, ect.; but, then what?

Most items have a slight "boon", but is there already, or a plan to bring these into the actual character's world? Such as...

- Clarifying where stores, taverns are actually located

- gaining enough renown to have the vanity featured specifically in a scenario, mod, or AP

- if GM's report that after the adventure the party re-supplied, upgraded items, ect. at a specific character's store, or celebrated at their tavern? Maybe even having a slight percentage of gold awarded to the owner's character, or have "xp" placed on that vanity eventually leading to a growing and expanding business that may actually end with a well known location, in the biggest city, that attracts customers from throughout the world, ect. (think of it as sim-pathfinder, or the vanity being it's own character that grows with the player)

This would all be easy enough to do with a home game, but any chance of applying a role-playing aspect to these in the PF Society?

I don't think that level of complexity works well in an organized play environment.

First an entire set of mechanics would need to be devised for how this worked.

Second, the development team barely has time for the projects they already have, let alone for an entire new set of mechanics for PFS only.

What a cool idea, however I agree with Andrew, it would pretty much take an entire overhaul of the current reporting mechanics. I fear such a change would put even more work onto the shoulders of GMs and volunteers.

But hey! If you have a bar let me know! Wolf, my devout Halfling follower of the brave lord of spirits would like to visit for a day (week when including hangover) or two.

I recently made business cards (50 free at moo.com if anyone else is interested) for my PFS character to hand out during introductions. On the back I included a little blurb about visiting my shop in Absalom. The +1 to Profession checks, out-of-character, might not be worth the 5pp I spent on it, but I liked the idea of a Tengu Rogue setting up a shop named "The Dirty Bird" as a front for more mischievous operations =D

Nice, I thought about doing that or even getting rings to hand around (in game, not actual rings) for people to visit my shop in Absalom.

I think mechanically what you want is some way for fellow PFS members to reward the shop's owner? How about an extra 50 gold (maybe it is 150 now), 'cause that is what the a nat20 would give me _with_ the +1 to day job rolls. :)

I don't think it would take much of an "overhaul", but those were just ideas off the top of my head.

Much like anything that is "bought" must be on a chronicle sheet, anything bought FROM could easily be added as well. While I don't know what happens to the GM reports after they are submitted, doesn't seem like a lot to add from the player or GM side.

Perhaps instead of reporting a scenario/mod/AP, which rewards the character with xp and gold; there were chronicle sheets for a vanity, representing a week/month/year of use. These "vanity scenarios" could be at a cost of addition PP to "upgrade" the vanity to add improved benefit to that vanity.

Not to open the crafting can of worms, but perhaps owning a shop, would allow a 1 time ability for a spellcaster to "craft" that special items you can't get anywhere.

Maybe an alchemist created a special brew that is only available at his/her tavern.

Again all of this is easy to incorporate in a home game, but since pathfinder society is about having an equal playing field, no matter where you play, why not emphasize the role playing of how the player's faction "sponsored" the character's businees venture.

Just seems like a whole new side of the society would come to life and continue to define the ever changing character. This is, of course, all be optional. If a player is happy knowing those PP went towards a little extra "fluff"... great! But IF a player wanted to develop their character's life when NOT adventuring... the possibilities are there.

Think of it this way, when a player spends PP for a magic item, they don't do so just to be able to say, "I own a (insert item of choice here)"... they do it so that item can be USED by their character or party.

Dark Archive

Very interesting idea, but given how much is on the plate of the Campaign Staff, I doubt they are going to have time to come up with new rules for vanities.

My wisdom 8 noble scion chelish sorceror almost has enough prestige to get a town house. Because owning property and having a place to planar bind devils is much more important that something silly like having enough prestige to get raised from the dead...

Well I know my tiefling wizard makes a good living out of her Tattoo shop (though I don't get a lot of goodies for the discount), it has paid off though.. I've made 3 100gp Job Checks with it so far.

I wish that I could make a permanent Demiplane when/if I get to the level I can cast those. It would be so fun to have a little 'hole in the wall' shop in Absalon with a HUGE garden/complex in the backroom. :D

wow, I thought I was the only person to do business cards for some of my PCs.

Though I just print them myself...

I just started printing cards for the things my Alchemist hands out to the other party members... Alchemical items, etc. Works great!

At the moment, the closest thing we've had have been contests or drawings at Gen Con by which players can name elements of the campaign, from NPCs to taverns. Managing a single new bit of continuity we have to weave into the world is much easier than having tens of thousands of potential new taverns we need to keep track of. We've got some ideas of expanding what we currently offer to be more akin to what you're asking for, but I don't think the final version (if we implement changes at all) will take exactly the same form.
