Before I begin: I am a player in Kingmaker so please use spoiler tags if you give spoilers.
So my pc is our kingdom's warden. And if I don't mix something up that means that I am responsible for the cityguard and the defence.
I don't know which book we are in (number or name) but..
We are currently not at war with anybody and as it is rather expensive we don't have any standing army.
Now my idea was to buy some siege weapons to help defend the capital should something bad come that way. And once we hit level 9 (next feat) I'm thinking about taking leadership (it is allowed) to have my followers form a special unit for the city guard that can man and use siege weapons. I was thinking about trebuchets because they have long range wich means few should suffice to fire at the whole surroundings of our city.
We currently have a castle (build cheaper because of ruins) but no citywalls.
So does anyone have an idea what I could do (without having to invest too much personal funds) to help with what is my kingdom role?
If it matters my pc in a scarred witchdoctor.

Look at the castle expansion rules I just posted. They are in their own thread. Also, GM_Solspiral has posted his own version as well.
Talk to your GM about forming a small but elite army to defend the city. It would have a weekly cost, but would be better than a volunteer city guard.
Build those city walls. They help a great deal.
Siege engines like the trebuchet need an army to run. Also, that siege engine is a bit too large for castle walls and is not the easiest to aim. If you want practical siege engines for a wall and that fast to aim and fire, go with ballista. Unfortunately, if your GM is using the mass warfare rules as written the siege engines are useless.
Leadership is great. Check out what I wrote about it.
