My friend and I are dipping our toes into PFS for the first time, and we're deciding what factions to join. His faction was pretty obvious - Andoran - but I'm having a hard time deciding on mine.
My character is a LN human Inquisitor of Iomedae. He's about 50, so he was a kid when Galt fell into ruin and as a result he's highly distrustful of ideals like "liberty" and "democracy," believing such things inevitably lead to, well, Galt. He worships Iomedae, and hopes the world will someday live up to her standards, but he believes you need absolute order to accomplish this.
He also has a bit of an Inspector Javert thing going on with my friend's character.
My instincts say he should join Cheliax - he was technically a citizen of Cheliax when he was born, Cheliax is the faction that believes in order above all, and Cheliax is a natural foil to my friend's Andoran - but he serves Iomedae and I can't imagine he'd go all in on the devil-servitude. Looking at the traits and such for Cheliax, they all seem REALLY focused on the dark, diabolic stuff, not so much on the pure order aspect of the faction.
Basically, if I go Cheliax, will I be able to carry out my faction missions while staying true to my character's motivations? Or is every Cheliax faction mission going to entail devil-worship and the spread of evil along with the spread of law?
(I am okay with occasionally having my guy turn his nose up at a mission and say, "No, that's beneath me." I just don't want to have to do it every other mission.)

Hi there! I'm Fasch. I venerate Irori but also Asmodeus and other gods that teach us how to be as powerful as we can possibly be. If we want to make a mark on the world, for good or for evil, we need power.
You would do just great with Cheliax, which will provide you with all you need to increase your power. True, the vanities aren't great unless you wear heavy armor...well, who am I kidding. Our vanities are the worst of any faction if you don't wear heavy armor. But there should only be one or two missions you'll have to refuse, as long as bringing body parts like hearts from evil foes to teach them the lesson of their wrongdoing floats your boat. The only one I can think of that you definitely wouldn't do is send souls to Asmodeus, and that only happened once.
Also be aware that Ms. Zarta might make lots of squicky advances at you, regardles of your age, gender, or opinion on the matter. I think she's just playing, though, so you should be fine even if you don't want to join her in bed.
*Fasch hands you back your valuables.*
You should really take better care of those, you know? Practice your perception up so you don't get ambushed by monsters!

Chelaxians, in general, need to pay lip service to Admodeus to keep out of trouble. It is the state church I believe. So in Cheliax you wouldn't be popular openly worshipping someone else. Zarta Dralneen gives out faction missions and she seems to be the opposite of orderly and lawful. They don't involve much direct contact with devils.

I think YES ! My character is Chelaxian (Fighter) that hails from the NW regions. He was born in Pezzack and lived most of his 19 years (human) between that city and Kintargo. Both are not "avid supporters" of the Chelaxian ways in politics or religion. Therefore, my CG fighter has developed a love of the older God ARODEN. He is an adventurous soul and he joined the TALDOR faction to pursue his goals. Develope a suitable/believable background and your GM may accept it....so long as you play your character according to that design.

You can make almost anything work with proper motivation and backstory.
My Cheliaxian PC is a NG halfling life oracle. She is also a slave. Her master wants her in the Society and nowhere near Cheliax, because he knows she has the ability to harm evil outsiders by channeling. She will do as she is told because her family is still held in Cheliax.
