Since Varisians are wanderers I've decided to make any character who is a traveling or roguish sort of Varisian fluent in Varisian/hobo signage. For those who don't know during the depression hobos would leave marks indicating that a house was a good place to get food or a town that had cops who would harass the hobos. Of course I have to modify it some as there are no train tracks here..... For an example of hobo signage have a look at

As long as you don't call them 'hobo signs' in game, I think this is a great idea! I think the 'hobo sign' name gives them both a stigma, and a too modern connotation, but I think this is precisely the type of thing that would arise in a nomadic community like that of native Varisians, particularly when they started to interact with Chelish settlements. I would suggest something a little more romantic, like wander-marks.
A neat little hint that you could hide in those markings is a relationship to Thassilonian runes, harkening back to early Varisian history. Thus, something viewed by the Chelish settlers as little more than urban graffiti by vagabonds would actually have a long cultural history.
