Yaks and Handle Animal

Lantern Lodge 4/5

During a mod I played recently my gnome oracle bought a yak. Her reason being they were heading somewhere cold and mountain-y and yaks are cool in those kind of places. Now I want to train that animal to be a mount and I have been reading the FAQ. I want to make sure I am understanding the rules correctly; since they are somewhat different than those outside of organized play.

I can teach an animal for a single purpose (riding) as long as I have three ranks in handle animal. (I do because of my oracle's foray into the ways of the gunslinger.) Do I just need to do one check in front of the GM and have that person sign off on my chronicle? Or do I need to do this for several scenarios? I am a little confused about that part of it.

Also later, when I have more ranks in handle animal, could I then upgrade to combat training? Thanks for any help.

Yak: available in the adventurers armory so legal i think

You can do the Riding training in one check

Alternatively, you may train one animal for a single purpose as long as you have enough ranks in Handle Animal to train the animal in each trick learned as part of that purpose. You may take 10 on Handle Animal checks to teach an animal companion tricks.

From handle animal:

You may also “upgrade” an animal trained for riding to one trained for combat by spending 3 weeks and making a successful DC 20 Handle Animal check. The new general purpose and tricks completely replace the animal's previous purpose and any tricks it once knew. Many horses and riding dogs are trained in this way.

I'd say you might need 3 ranks in handle animal to do the upgrade, but you should be fine .

Yakity Yak! Just make the rolls in front of a GM and have them note it on your chronicle. One scenario to train riding and then you can train them for combat on the next chronicle.
