Manhattan: a Speculative Scifi collective

I noticed that Energy Hungry Island of Manhattan has been the singular Priority for New York's Energy switch-on while the Poor Majority outside are left to fend for themselves with Fuel Rationing and military occupation.

It occurred to me that this might be a Premise for some speculative Scifi. Ideas?

1. Manhattan is a secret City-State populated by the Wealthy.
2. Super-storm Sandy was created using a man-made black hole.

No... it has to do with the physical realities. Staten Ialand and New Jersey where much harder hit than Manhattan. There's also the reality that you can't switch on power grids until you've taken care of all of the downed lines, fallen trees, and the numerous gas leaks.

There are also still areas of lower Manhattan which are in the dark at this time for the same infrastructure reasons.

Although at least your idea is different than the Kurt Russell movie which used Manhattan as a lifer's prison. Apparently one so bad, that you get a one time chance at execution, just before you're tossed in and the key is thrown away.

New Jersey isn't exactly a "bedroom" state. Included in that power loss was the United State's largest oil refinery which was still down as of Friday. A lot of it is simply logistics. Also remember that Staten Island is an Island after all. It had the bad luck of being in a real bad place in the storm track.

In New Jersey, Hoboken was hit so bad that for a couple of days it became an island. Quite a few of the Jersey Shore towns like Hazlet, Leonardo, simply no longer exist.

I was more talking about Manhattan Island on the "why is this place so damn important?!?!?" level than "New Jersey sucks!!!", but you speak true. Staten Island is often turned into Atlantis during such storms, so much to the point that I worry for the long-term future of the island.

The island will survive just fine until the next ice age glaciers come and recarve the landscape. The only things that really change are fluctuations of property values.
