Wow.
Today's GOP (especially the Tea Party Wing) really seems to be a resurrection of the Know-Nothing Party of the 1850s.

Question is, is being a local sucessful businesswoman (who is already a state legislator) more important to SD voters than a guy who has apparently dedicated his life to global warming and cap and trade? Which is the more important hotbutton issue right now, jobs and economy or global climate change?

By successful business are you referring to the non-controlling partnership in a farm that she inherited from her family? The one that has received 3 million dollars in subsidies from the USDA?
Anyway, the point was that the video portrayed Varilek as a very educated person who is well versed in policy making and foreign affairs who travelled all over the world to initiate environmental policy reform while it made Noem look like a podunk farmer who won a farming award.
Besides that it was pretty disingenuous. Varilek has had a very active political life. One of his focuses happened to be about the environment but the video leaves out everything else he has worked on with Senator Tim Johnson and Tome Daschle. It also leaves out the fact that he was employed as a market analyst for an energy commodities brokerage - which is why he was involved environmental issues in the first place!

The sad thing is that ad will likely be successful. Not neccessarily in getting her elected, but in appealing to the demographics it was aimed at.
Unfortunately that's probably true.
Couple that with the standard tricks used (deeper pitched voice when talking about Varilek and higher pitched when talking about Noem, images of Noem show her in a farm setting or with "regular people" while images of Verilek show him with partying folks and tying him to "the media", etc.) and it will most likely have impact, regardless of the fact that it is a pretty bad freaking ad.
"1000 hot dogs, 1200 beers and a 150 lb. ice luge for consuming shots of jagermeister ..." ... seriously? ... how about focusing on political stances?
