Kingmaker Genre Alterations

Kingmaker

My group and I are having trouble finding stability in a game (a collective short attention span is to blame). Also, we have little time and very dynamic lifestyles, usually making it hard for someone to commit to the role of DM. Three of us change seats alot, DMing alternately.
So, I was thinking, since none of us seems to have much time to prepare full fledged campaigns, maybe an adventure path could do most of the work for us and allow us to "maximise" our "play potential".
Looking over Kingmaker I thought it would be ideal since it's sandbox style-of-play could allow us to keep moving, even if we can't play as much as we would wan't.
But looking over the adventure path (I've reread it, reading it a while back), I'm not sure it'll be thematically fullfilling, and I would really like to do something more unique with it. We've been ithching for a pirate campaign (none of us 3 potential DMs felt we'd like to run Skulls and Shackles), and I figured I could substitute the areas for exploring islands and the such, and I also thought of making the whole thing kind of western-y (a more conquering of the wild west aspect, with Indians and guns and maybe setting up railways).
Has something like this been tried by anyone? Any advise people who have run the whole adventure path can give? Or even other cool ideas (either regarding my offers, or new) would be appreciated.

Onw word of warning:
Kingmaker need a lot of time from the DM, it's sandbox sure, but this means you have to oversee a lot, keep track of different story arcs, NPCs even complete Kingdoms etc.
If you don't want to get overhelmed by it, you also have to ask your players to do some tracking etc.

My suggestion would be to grab an adventure module or run single adventures.

Since we are all veteran players, playing together for almost ten years, and three of us having experiance as DMs also, we don't have trust issues, so I can count on the group to keep track of most of their kingdom building by themselves. Also, worst comes to worst, I can always downplay that aspect of the AP and instead focus on exploring etc.

Is perfect for it, I think..
You have plenty of opportunities to add stuff, but overall I read it once and simply went with it..
Its sandboxstyle is absolutely perfect for you :)

My group has pretty much decided that by changing the location, the genre, the characters involved (PC and NPC alike - same NPC cast but with a completely different group of PCs can elicit completely different reactions!), or one of a wide list of other options Kingmaker can be adapted for pretty much a new experience each time it's played. Very few other APs have as much replay value, IMO.
