Fey bloodline (GM story ideas)

Kingmaker

I'll be the first to admit I'm new to the pathfinder multiverse. I would love any help. My gnome sorcerer has a fey bloodlines. I have an almost blank slate with her character I'd love help developing a storyline this character can star in. Any advice big or small would be great.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Gnomes in Golarion ARE Fey... or rather, used to be. They lived in the First World until something drove them onto the Prime, they came through curiosity, or they got lost and wandered there. Not ALL Gnomes left, of course, so there are still some Fey "True" Gnomes out there.

In essence, a Gnome with the Fey Bloodline is much closer to their original state - a Fey creature rather than a true humanoid, which their descendants became by being born with souls and living and changing on the Prime - than many of her fellows. In essence, your bloodline is letting you get in touch with your heritage in a very real, very literal way.

There is a lot of Fey activity in Kingmaker. Perlivash and Tyg in the first chapter, the Dryad and Satyr in the second, the Spriggans in the third, and so on, up to Nyrissa's plot being behind everything. Play that up, heavily, on both the good and bad sides. Allow her to see that fey can be both friendly and helpful, and capricious and carelessly dangerous. At the same time, inform her how her powers are making her more and more like them. With any luck, your player will be able to play this up in turn, having their character become more and more "inhuman" as their Fey heritage manifests more strongly.

Silver Crusade

Before he was eaten, our group had a gnome sorcerer who pushed for equal rights for fey within the kingdom's borders, much to the chagrin of the loggers who suffered either malicious attacks or pranks from the fey. While your gnome doesn't have to be a crusader for equal rights, giving the good fey in your area a voice might be up her alley.

Oh, and don't forget the Old Beldame in Chapter 2. She's also a Fey-bloodline Sorc. If the party can get on her good side, she can probably teach your Gnome quite a lot about her heritage.

As of right now were resting between book 2 and 3. The entire area around lake silverstep has been declared an official fey preserve under the kingdom's protection. The old beldame took a liking to her but thus far my gnome player has seemed less than interested.

As she is magister of the kingdom, Ive thought of having a stronger druid base than wizards in the kingdom. Her current objective she wants to open an accademy for the children of the kingdom. Not sure how the (mostly) human population will react to a fey schooling.

Are elves considered fey in pathfinders or just have ties to the first world?

What are good books for first world reading?

Elves are more naturey in general, they don't have any specific ties to fey other than tending to get along with them.

I can't speak for everyone but my fey are heavily based on a combination of The Dresden Files Fae and the Children of Oberon from Gargoyles. Dresden's Nevernever would be the analogue to the First World, with folks like the Fae Queens and the Erlking equivalent to the Eldest. The Leanandsidhe would probably be right about on par with Nyrissa. The books Summer Knight, Dead Beat, Proven Guilty, Small Favor, and Changes in the series and the short story "Something Borrowed" in the compilation My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding all contain significant Dresdenverse Fae plot participation.

Scarab Sages

Yes, Dresden files are excellent sources of faerie goodness.

I also highly recommend War of the Oaks by Emma Bull. It is the story about a mortal woman caught in the middle of a war between light and dark faerie courts. Quite good reading, if a bit heavy on the 80s Minneapolis music scene. The best part of this book is it shows the casual cruelty and "alien" mindset of the fae, not the same as what a human would be like.

Look for Gnomes of Golarion, also the last chapter of Kingmaker (Sound of a Thousand Screams) has a super spectacular article about the First World. finally the Inner Sea World Guide has some info about both the first world and gnomes. all of them are worth their weight in skymetals (especially gnomes of golarion, found in the players companions)

Insert the Witch Market and use that to insert all kinds of plot hooks. Do a search on the boards to find the discussion I started a while ago.

I too have a fey blood line sorcerer. She is human, so I had her be the granddaughter of the Old Beldame. That doesn't work so well with a gnome though.

You could have certain fey refuse to talk to anyone but her, or have them feel like she abandoned them somehow and refuse to deal with her.

Look into Open Design's Margreve. It is a forest that is alive and full of mystery. I have that in my game and it is going to start talking to the sorcerer in my game very soon.
