Upgrading to Magic Weapons

Let's assume a person has lots of Fame Points so accessing the item from their Faction isn't a problem.

If I have a +1 Longsword (which I paid the cost of the Longsword, the Masterwork, and the +1, all to about 2300 GP or so), how much does it cost to turn the Longsword into a +1 Flaming Longsword? If the cost for a +2 weapon is 8000 GP, do I subtract the difference (8000 - 2300) from the cost of the upgrade?

And I guess this is where my actual question is. Does upgrading allow you to pick either +2 OR an enchantment? Or am I only allowed to upgrade to +2?

You may select either the additional +1 or any +1 enhancement (like flaming) and pay only the difference. In this case 6000 GP. Remember that like the +1 sword, the +2 sword also has the cost of the masterwork weapon added on too.

Don't forget that you must have enough fame for the entire cost of the weapon 8000 + masterwork weapon for your faction to find/upgrade your sword.

From how I understand it here's how it works. Firstly when upgrading a +1 item to a total enhancement mod of +2 it costs 6000 gp, because the cost of masterwork is not included in the table for price. Secondly when you upgrade an item, you can upgrade any numerical value it has (such as +1 enhancement bonus), or add new enhancements (such as flaming), or both.

So basically you can upgrade your +1 Longsword to a +1 Flaming Longsword or a +2 Longsword, or a +2 Flaming Longsword (a +3 weapon, which would cost 16k GP to upgrade from the +1).

I have always just subtracted the weapons current cost from the upgrade.
