I really need you thoughts here.

How do you manage the magical item that can be found in a city (typically xd4 minor, yd4 medium, zd4 major items) with the new subdivision in lesser and greater items ?
what is the meaning of 4d4 minor items in a city like Korvosa where one can found anything under 12 000 GP (as said in the player companion :varisia lang of legend) ?

thanks in advance !

Might be meant to limit how many items can be bought at a time. Basically you might only be able to buy 3 major items but the party might have 4 people who want major items so there would be a decision needed to be made on who gets to buy them.

Roll that 4d4, and tell them "This represents three days of downtime shopping throughout the city." Roll on p118 of the GMG. That's what's in town.

If the city is a busy place of commerce, frequented by adventurers, there might be a month or two turnaround time to replace the current stock of magic items. "Come back in the Spring, I'll have more then". Perhaps the players might become traveling magic merchants themselves...?

If it's something extremely specific (and empowering) that a player wants, then make it available as a quest item. "A Ring of Continuation? Sir, you KNOW those are forbidden, but I know someone with whom you can speak. For the right price, I can put you in touch with him, but he doesn't trust strangers..."

I guess if the city is large enough, just roll on the greater item list and not the lesser. Otherwise, you could flip a coin and roll on whichever comes up.

thank you all for your answers.

From the Core book:

There is a 75% chance that any item of that value or lower can be found for sale with little effort in that community. In addition, the community has a number of other items for sale. These items are randomly determined and are broken down by category (minor, medium, or major). After determining the number of items available in each category, refer to Table 15–2 to determine the type of each item (potion, scroll, ring, weapon, etc.) before moving on to the individual charts to determine the exact item. Reroll any items that fall below the community’s base value.

So basically the die roll is other things the party may not be looking for. As for the the newer category split, I'd just do half and half to show a better spread of items.
