Character Creation Questions

Hello all a new PFS player here. i recently played a God's Market Gambol Mod with my local PFS group and enjoyed the heck out of. i have been reading all the character creation PDF's bought my core handbook, and basically have begun trying to create a character but i am a little confused about a few things. For one i am stuck at the skills stage of my character creation. I am making an elf rogue models slightly after Merisiel and so have been looking to her pre-gen sheet for some tips while making a brand new lvl 1.

When i got to the skills section of the creation PDF it says:

Quote:

Step 4: Skills

The next step is determining what specific training your character has received. This is done in the standard fashion described in the Core Rulebook. Determine your starting skill points and spend them as you see fit.

but when i read the core handbook all it tells me is that the modifier for skills for a rogue is 8+int modifier. So basically my question is how many skills do i start out with and how do i determine my modifiers with each skill? the rogue pre-gen has some nice high numbers with lvl 1 skills and i want to know how to do it properly so i don;t Overpower him by accident. please help me ^^

What's your rogue's intelligence score? (Actually post all your scores.)

What about race?

And favored class ( I presume it's rogue) -- do you want the hit point or the skill point?

Example: Elf rogue, 12 Intelligence, favored class bonus goes to skill point.

You get

8 skill points for being a rogue
1 skill point for intelligence
1 skill point for favored class
-------
10 skill points total.

You can spend no more than 1 skill point per level to any one skill. So you can buy 10 skills.

Just like it says, you get 8+int modifier skill points to spend at each level for a rogue. For every skill point you spend, you get one rank in that skill. Characters can never have more ranks in a skill than their total level.

If a skill is a class skill for that character, then you get a one-time +3 bonus to that skill the first time you put a rank into it.

You also get a modifier based on the ability relevant ability score. For example, the Stealth skill is modified by your Dexterity modifier.

A 1st-level rogue with an 18 dexterity that puts a point into Stealth would therefore wind up with a total modifier of +8:

+1 rank
+3 class skill
+4 dexterity modifier
---------------------
+8 Stealth

All this is explained in the Skills chapter of the Core Rulebook, as well as in the Using Skills and Skill Descriptions sections of the PRD.

So what about your favored class bonus -- do you want 1 hit point, or 1 skill point?

What are your other scores?

Jonathan has posted a good example of calculating an individual skill score. Follow his example with the skills you want.

ok i think i see what you are saying. so since i am lvl one and i have 8 base int with a +2 as an elf which gives me 10 int that gives me no modifier which means i can basically choose 8 skills to place at lvl 1 correct?

that helps me so much thanks man

i also apoligize for not giving my ability scores here they are

Base Racial Total
str 14 14
dex 16 +2 18
con 14 -2 12
int 8 +2 10
wis 12 12
cha 10 10

5/5 *

You pretty much got it there. Just remember you only get the +3 if it is a class skill (for rogues, you can find their class skills in the core rulebook under the rogue section). You can put points in any skill, evein if it's not a class skill, but you don't get the +3

Finally, as Scooter mentioned above, you also get a minor bonus every time you gain a level of your favored class (which for simplicity, we will say it's rogue). This means you get either +1 bonus hit point, or +1 extra bonus skill point.

Since this is your first PFS character, I would suggest +1 hitpoint. Not dying is always great!

as for whether i want the skill point or hit point i don;t have enough knowledge to know which would be preferable. i know the rogue is very skill based but i would also like some survivability so could you make a recommendation?

I like skill points, but CRobledo has a point. The hit point will contribute more directly to your survivability. 8 skill points per level is pretty darn good.

See what it can buy you.

What skills are you interested in?
