Hey all. Since I am contributing in a big way to the Reaper Kickstarter, I feel that it's probably time to find a better home for my miniatures than the egg cartons I currently keep them in (especially since I'm going to be quadrupling my collection when the Kickstarter minis get here).
So, my question is: Is there a good place online to find display cases for miniatures? I'd like something with multiple shelves, glass doors, and something that stands on its own (rather than being wall mounted). Most of the cases I've found during a cursory Google search are either very shallow (for displaying shotglasses and other collectibles) or wall-mounted (often both). I'd really like something maybe 8-12 inches deep and probably no more than 6' tall.
Suggestions? Recommendations? I could possibly get my stepfather to custom-build me a case (he's a carpenter) but if I can find something pre-made that's not too expensive, that would be best. Thanks!

Try Ikea. I bought one of the half-width (15 or so inches) Billy bookcases, along with a glass door, glass shelves, and a couple of lights to illuminate the whole thing for not much over $100. I had to drill a few more holes to get shelves close to the top and bottom and the sides are solid instead of glass, but overall it works great and was a whole lot cheaper than any other decent display case I looked at.
Ikea actually does have a full glass case (Detolf, $65), but it only has four non-adjustable shelves, which puts the shelves much farther apart than they need to be for minis.

There's a German company that does very good acrylic display cases. They have a "Tin Figure Display Cabinet" that can be wall-mounted or rested on a table.
You can also order customized display cases.
They ship throughout Europe.

Hmmm. These look pretty good. Not exactly what I'm looking for, but they could be adapted.
Unfortunately, I am a filthy American and will need to find something similar that ships domestically. :)

Actually, the Shipping Rates page says "Other countries on request". But that may be incompatible with your earlier "not too expensive" request.

I found a cheap way of keeping them that looks really cool. Old jewelry boxes. I went to a few thrift stores and found some for a few bucks a pop kinda like a tackle box but with style.
I'm looking at a display case capable of accommodating literally hundreds of miniatures, though, several of which are Large, some that are Huge, a few Gargantuan, and at least two Colossal ones. Have you found jewelry cases capable of handling minis of that size/quantity? If so, I'm willing to hear more. :)

I bought a bunch of self-adhesive magnetic bases from Litko and stuck them on the bottom of my minis' bases. Then, I bought a roll-away tool chest on sale at Sears with various height drawers that open flush (all the way so you can reach items in the back without difficulty). The minis aren't on display, but I can store a ton of them and the magnetic bases keep them from falling over when opening the drawers...
Good luck finding what you like!

Yeah, storage isn't really so much the issue. I have plenty of cabinet space and other places to keep them right now, I'm really just looking for a way to display them, though, as I'm going to be putting an awful lot of work into painting them over the next year or so. :)
Thank you for the input, though, I would have never thought of something like that. My timeline on this project is still several months out, so keep the ideas coming! I remain interested and undecided.

How much room do you have width-wise? One thought is the jewelery cases from department stores that spin (or zippo cases or cigar cases that do the same) our FLGS uses these for high dolor magic cards and PPM/heroclix
That could be kind of cool. I've got plenty of space, that's not really much of a concern. I wonder how much those would cost? I may have to look into it. Cool idea!

Brand new, looks like $150... might want to look for stores going out of business or flea market type things (or craigslist)
edit: Ncaseit is a company that does cases like this for model cars:See here its a bit more expensive, but might be easier to find on sale... they also have cases for golf balls, baseballs, and hockey pucks that may be able to be used

I'd second Demetrius Kane above, have a look at Ikea's catalogue.
Billy bookcases with glass shelves and glass doors seems to be a great way to go, although you don't have glass sides.
Here's a guy who has his armies on display in such a way (including dustproofing the doors).
Then there's the Detolf, which Demetrius also mentions. It only has a fixed number of shelves, but you could get acrylic plates cut to the same dimensions and prop them up in the corners, even with acrylic rods, so you'd get more tiers.
There's also the Liatorp, although I can't see this one on the US site. Weird. But it has clear sides and you can put more shelves in it if desirable.
Klingsbo is functionally similar to the Detolf above, but a different design. Again, you can put more acrylic shelves in if you want to.

Wow, thanks! I think the Billy with glass doors is definitely the way to go! It's a little expensive (over $200 USD!) but I think I can manage it. It looks pretty sharp overall, and I can find a finish that matches the other furniture. Thanks!

BTW, here's a guy displaying a HUGE army (Warhammer 40K) in two Ikea Detolf cabinets (with some acrylic raisers to provide a little extra space):
