My GCSE English teacher gave me a very stern telling-off for plagiarising Stainless Steel Rat for a short-story exercise, and then complemented my choice of material. Feeling rather sad now I've heard this news.
Edit: Is it just my aged eyes, or is that an older version of Wil Wheaton on the cover of The Stainless Steel Rat for President?

I didn't get around to reading Harrison until college, but I read the first 6 or 7 "Stainless Steel Rat" books. I especially liked the first book in that series.
I remember my daughter (who, I think, was about 5 years old at the time) seeing me reading Bill, the Galactic Hero. She asked me about it, so I told her the story. She laughed at it, and it soon became clear that the anti-war theme was communicated to her even at that age.

I read Bill, the Galactic Hero, at the tender age of 8.
I agree with Matthew Morris.

A good author; one of the "golden age of SF" that used stories to examine societies, social values, and the human condition.
May he continue to serve as an inspiration for other authors, existing in the wainscoting of the imagination as the "Slippery Jim" existed in the wainscoting of ferrocrete and stainelss steel.
