Archer Overcoming DR

Advice

Liberty's Edge

My main PFS character is an 8th lvl archery based ranger. Due to the lack of high level characters in my gaming group I end up playing up so the other players have enough for a table. In my last scenario I ended up setting out one battle because I didn't have any arrows that would overcome the DR of the evil character that attacked us. Granted he had 3 different DR and no one in the group had a weapon to overcome all of them but the others were able to overcome some of it.

Anyway, I don't want to have to purchase arrows of every known DR (my gnome couldn't carry them) so I am looking for another option. Any advice?

Sovereign Court

A monster with 3 types of DR that a lvl 8 character can't hurt?!? That... seems wrong.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of something that would do it, save for a crit. Would the clustered shots feat help in this case? I'm not really up on my archery stuff.

Shadow Lodge

You should get an Efficient Quiver. My archer actually has two to make sure I have all the arrows I need.

...and yes Clustered Shots is a GREAT feat to get for a higher level archer. You've got lots of shots so the cumulative damage should do the trick.

Cylyria: The rest of the group is lvl 10+, so, I am really playing up. The only reason I get away with it is that they keep me in the back so I don't get hit. They keep me around because I can do massive damage if everything hits. The bad guy was an oracle that was possessed by a pit fiend. I don't remember what the third DR was but the first two were evil and adamantite.

Euan: I do have an Efficient Quiver and I carry normal, silver and blunt arrows. I could get a second one but I was looking for a more creative solution. Does Cluster Shots overcome all DR? In other words if you have normal arrows would it overcome evil for example?

Shadow Lodge

Clustered shots doesn't overcome DR, but it does mean it's only applied once for all your hits as opposed to each hit. So if you hit two or three times it really lets a lot of the damage through. :)

But yeah, DR Evil is a hard one to get past as an archer.

Clustered shots won't help you directly overcome DR, but it will let you add up all your damage from multiple shots so the DR only applies once.

Say the monster has DR 10/good & adamantine

You shoot 3 shots that each do 10 damage. You'll do 0 total damage.
With clustered shots, you add up the 3 shots to equal 30 damage, then take 10 DR off, so you'd still do 20 damage total.

Weapon blanches can be a way to overcome certain DR, and you can carry oil of bless weapon to handle DR/good. That or a +1 holy longbow isn't a bad thing once you can afford it.

Shadow Lodge

Ozymandeus, I'm pretty sure Oil of Bless Weapon on the bow doesn't work on the arrows, so it's a lot less useful than it looks.

"Individual arrows or bolts can be transmuted, but affected projectile weapons (such as bows) don't confer the benefit to the projectiles they shoot." Bless Weapon (link)

That's one expensive arrow!

But Holy bows are great!

Oil (Potion) of Align Weapon will work on 50 projectiles.

Honestly, as a level 8 archer you should have multiple arrows of each type. Including Adamantine. Sidenote: Mending will repair destroyed adamantine arrows (but it takes 10minutes per arrow).

With an archer I can defeat any DR except for DR/slashing and DR/- with arrows.

Blunt
Piercing
Silver
Cold Iron
Adamantine
All alignments (oils of align weapon).

Honestly? I find the usefulness of Clustered Shots to be a means to not have to do book keeping.

The craft skill can also repair broken arrows, by making the same DC check to fix them. It costs 1/5 the item cost to fix it.

This is best when using stone arrows, since they are no different from regular arrows that would break, except they are very cheap.

Good point Grizzly. In the past we have 'dug out' adamantine arrows and fixed them. Or found the broken ones. Only lost arrows are truly a loss and require replacement.

*innocently* DR/vorpal?

Midnight_Angel: Cute:) I meant any of the standard DR types. But of course, you knew that. ;)

Get a holy bow, it is worth it.
buy 10 of each special material arrow. cast abundant ammunition.
To over come slashing and bludgeoning you can use broad head (i think) and blunt arrows or cast Versatile Weapon
