Most useful books to get?

I'm going to be picking up the Inner Sea World Guide while it's on sale. Are there any other books of similar importance you would recommend for a GM planning on running games in Golarion?

I dont think there's a similarly universal book, however the various Pathfinder Campaign Setting regional books are generally very high quality. I think it's definitely worth investing in whichever one covers the area you're interested in setting your campaign. If there's a Pathfinder Player Companion book focussed on the same area, I think those are good value to (although there is occasionally some overlap).

Dark Archive

I highly recommend City of Strangers, the Kaer Maga book. Definitely a neat and unique city setting in Golarion. Magnimar City of Monuments is pretty good too.

I've found any books dealing with Varisia are a great start.

Dungeons of Golarion provides a good bit of information on cool dungeonscapes for your campaign, too.

Those are the Campaign setting books I've found to be my favored but really any of the CS regional books can be great depending on the tone of your campaign.

EDIT: PS. Guide to the River Kingdoms is great for some variety! ONe of the first CS books I bought for Golarion.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Inner Sea Magic is full of archetypes and other good stuff for the spellslingers.

The Faction Guide could be useful, particularly if you are homebrewing your adventures/campaign.

The Pathfinder Society Field Guide has some hidden gems (Agile weapon quality, some archetypes for various classes, etc.). Even if your're not using the PFS (in the Golarion faction sense, not the organised play sense), you can certainly cannibalise some parts of it.

The Inner Sea Primer is a PF Player Companion book which is an entirely player-friendly version of the Inner Sea World Guide. No irredeemable spoilers there!

If you want a particularly detailed look at a religion, find the Adventure Path installment which covers it. Usually these articles are in numbers 2 and 5 of an AP, but from Serpent's Skull and onwards there are occasional "extra" religions described in other installments.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've determined that the first AP I run will be RotR. I'm probably going to try to find a way to make it run to 20th level, since it gets all the way to 17 by itself and I know at least one player is going to want to reach 20. Books about Varisia are probably the best way to go.

I know Magnimar is in Varisia, but is Kaer Maga? Any others?

Kaer Maga and Korvosa both have sourcebooks and are in Varisia. (Korvosa's is in the 3.5/OGL subcategory but is a really great book, imo and definitely worth it).
