[Paizo Project Research]Animal Tricks

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Scarab Sages

Hello folks,

I'm working on an official Paizo project, and want to round up all the animal tricks from official products. Obviously there are the animal tricks from the Handle Animal skill, but are there any from other sources?

The Falconer has a few unique tricks they can teach their companion. Though I guess those might count partially as class features.

Might want to check out the alternative stuff in the APG and Ultimate books.

Swooping Charge - Ultimate Combat, falconer

General Purpose training:

I have access to about 80% of the book on Hero Lab, and these are the only tricks that appear on that program. The books I don't have access to are: Blood of Fiends, Faiths of Balance, Faiths of Purity, Inner Sea Primer, Book of the Damned 3, Distant Worlds, Dragon Empires Gazetteer, Giants Revisited, Isles of the Shackles, Land of the Linnorm Kings, Lost Kingdoms, and Mythical Monsters Revisited.

There are also some from the 3.5 books as well if you would like those too.

I have the datasets that Caleb is missing and they don't add any more tricks so their list might be all of them.

If you are aware of neat tricks from a 3pp 3.5 product I'd love to hear about them. If they are from an official D&D product I'd just as soon not know, since I couldn't use them in a product for publication anyway. :D

Dragon Magazine, back in the mid-90s, had the best ever article on dog "skills," "ability scores" and such. I think it was around Issue 230/231/232 or so.

If you're not familiar with it then you really need to look it up for this project -- and if you remember it then obviously you'll go grab it and reread it when you get the chance.

It still blows away the messy crap-bag of 3E Animal Companion stuff that helped make the 3.0 PHB one of the worst D&D books ever.

Of course, since it's 2nd Edition you'll have to adjust it a bit but, still, it's a great system-design for PCs with dog companions and can be tinkered with to enter the Pathfinder game and expand beyond canine companions.

EDIT: I just looked it up; it's in Dragon #237. The article was written by Clayton R. Beal.

Can you clarify how the "general purpose" trick bundles work with the free bonus tricks that companions get?

Oh man I'm SO curious about this. I'll have to see if I can find it online anywhere, since the odds of scoring a hard copy are probably nil.

It is funny reading the lists and seeing come, fetch, etc. listed as separate skills, and then "perform" is just "perform."

It's a whole lot easier to train a fetch than it is to train a PERFORM: GLADIATOR

It's also available in the CD ROM Dragon Archive, which contains the first 250 issues of Dragon. That probably doesn't help you much, though - the last time I saw a copy of that offered for sale the asking price was close to $200

It's a five-page article. Basically it presents a 4-ability-score system for dogs (Intelligence, Loyalty, Aggressiveness, Strength), and a list of tricks (called skills) that can be trained.

The mechanics are broadly similar to those of PFRPG Animal Tricks, although attempting each trick/skill does require a DC check.

I haven't seen this in print anywhere (though it certainly could be) but always thought a trick for "circle" or "flank" would be a good one. I've always interpreted the attack trick to simply mean attack from the nearest square possible (similar to charging but without incurring the charge modifiers). For that matter "charge" would be a good trick to add, as would tricks from some of the CMB choices, such as "grapple", "trip", etc.
