Pathfinder Society

Dark Archive

So I bought a ticket to play The Haunting of Hinojai at Gencon. I didn't really realize what all the Pathfinder Society involved at the time. Unfortunately, while I've had experience playing Pathfinder with my friends, I've never done anything with the Pathfinder Society, so I don't have a character at the right level.

I don't think I can find a group to level one in time, so what do I do? Can I make up a character that starts at level 5, or do I have to play one of the pre-gens? If I do have to use the pre-gens, how much am I allowed to alter them? I was originally hoping on playing a wizard, but Ezren doesn't appeal to me at all. Could I change "fluff" aspects, like age, gender, or name? What about more important ones, like race?

If I can create a level 5 character, how do I outfit her? Looking at the pre-gens again, it seems like normal starting gear wouldn't cut it. Is there some sort of equipment guideline I should follow? Or, considering that I'm planning on playing a wizard, does it not matter?

Please help me! I'm really looking forward to the game, and I don't want to come in with no clue what to do.

You would use a level 7 pregen. Fluff is fine to chance as well as spell selection and you can buy items if you have the gold.

If you have any other questions let me know.

Hope to meet you at Gencon!

Erisana,

You can only play a pregen. If you want to play a wizard than Ezren is your guy. You can change his basics (name, ht, wt, eyes, hair and sex) but not his race or equipment.

You can then apply the Chronicle you get to a new character.

Ninja'd by Evan!

You'd have to use a pregen, and as far as I am aware, you would have to leave the thing as is mechanically.

Edit: Ninja'd. A bunch.

There'll be several Pathfinder Society adventures for 1st-level characters going on in the same room, at the same time, as "The Haunting of Hinojai". It may be possible to convince the marshals to let you play in one of those adventures instead.

You will have to play a level 7 pregen for that scenario. You cannot change any mechanical aspects of the pregen PC, including equipment. Most GMs would be fine with changing the name and, I would guess, the age and gender as well.

The best thing to do is to change your ticket to a tier 1-5 scenario if that is possible.

I hope you enjoy PFS and don't let this little speed bump discourage you.

Alternatively, when you arrive at the room for mustering to your table, you could tell the Venture-Captain (or Mike Brock the Campaign Coordinator) your dilemma, and I'm sure he will do his best to sit you at a level appropriate table. If it is on Thursday Evening, I'd be willing to trade you my tier 1-5 ticket for your Haunting of Hinojai ticket if you are worried about not being able to be seated.

Okay, thanks for the help. There aren't any pregenerated characters for the Advanced Player's Guide classes, are there?

No they were retired when Ultimate magic came out and then those were retired when ultimate Combat came out.

Right now, besides the core ones, there is a ninja, samurai, and gunslinger.

Oh, okay. Thanks again!

Edit: Wow, I missed a bunch of posts. I will look into seeing if I can change to a lower-level scenario, although I thought the plot for that one sounded cool. Thank you for the offer, Andrew, but I'm playing Saturday night.

There used to be Pregens for some of the APG classes available for play, but they are not any more. They might re-open to play at GenCon but I would not bet on it.

Thanks Evan, I have been thinking about it.

I have a lot going on in real life right now but things should settle down in a few months and I will more likely do it some time in October or after.

I will be in touch.
