Rise of the Runelords - Character Classes

Rise of the Runelords

Sovereign Court

Hi All:

With the release of Rune Lords next week, I plan to pick up the book and eventually run the campaign from. My question is this: do I use the character classes as presented in the Beginners Box (i.e. wizard, cleric, rogue, fighter), or allow players to make their own characters?

Liberty's Edge

You can do either. The classes in the Beginner's Box will produce perfectly good characters for the Adventure Path, as would characters built from the regular core rulebooks.

The one problem with using the Beginner's Box is that it stops at level 5, and Rise of the Runelords stops at about level 17. After 5th level, you'll have to switch to the regular rules.

I have run the first module twice. First time, I had:

Half-orc rogue.
Human fighter.
Human paladin.
Human sorcerer.
Half-elf bard.
Elf druid (joined half-way through).

Second time around was with a party of mainly psionic characters from DSP's Psionics Unleashed - three psychic warriors, a psion, a wilder and a cleric.

It's a good, solid adventure that really doesn't demand anything specific. Some knowledge skills are good and helpful, as there are a lot of clues here as to where the adventure is going, but they are not really essential. As long as you have a good hitter, an arcane caster (not necessarily a full caster), a character that can heal and someone with some skills (particularly perception) then you can do this entire adventure path.

The beginner box characters will work just fine up to level 5, although a few of the frills from the Core Rulebook (Favored class bonus, for example) would make things a little more survivable.

My guess is that the rerelease of this AP is actually more survivable than the original in general, as some of the major challenge ratings glitches (you know I mean Xanesha) have been respec'd entirely.

Is this box coming out next week? I swore it was coming in November or something. I guess I was confused. Looking forward to it.

Liberty's Edge

The Anniversary edition is out publicly July 18th. The super hardcore delux mega anniversary edition will be released in November.

I guess I will now go read the product descriptions and see what the differences are. Thanks!

Oh, so its just the PDF for those who pre-order the hardcover. Crud. I cant get it then. Paizo doesnt take Amex or direct Paypal. I guess I could do money order on the box since its physical, and maybe that'd trigger pdf availability. But at that point, I might as well let my local comic book shop get me a copy in November, since I already asked him to.

Thanks!

Actually the deluxe edition is a website exclusive from what I recall, so you won't be able to get it through your FLCS
