Quintessential Chaos Mage 3.5 to Pathfinder Conversion?

Conversions

[This isn't getting any love in the General Thread...so I thought I'd give it a try here. The Pathfinder game that I've been asked to join will be starting soon...]

I'm brand spanking new to Pathfinder...and it's been years since I played D&D Third Edition.

I just got invited to play in a Pathfinder game, I was told that Pathfinder is pretty much D&D 3.5 with some tweaks and I remembered that the one 3.5 class that I was really interested in, but never got to play, was Mongoose Publishing's Chaos Mage.

I have The Quintessential Chaos Mage book...just dusted it off my shelves and was wondering if any of you Pathfinder veterans could clue me into the quick and easy conversions for this specific character.

Any of you familiar with the 3.5 class and the best way to make it a Pathfinder character?

In my carefree days of youth, I would have enjoyed the challenge of converting this myself. Now I have a family and responsibilities and just want to get to play the games when I can spare the time.

If anyone has already tweaked the Chaos Mage for Pathfinder, I'd LOVE to see the fruits of your labors.

Anyone?

I'm totally unfamiliar with that class, sadly, but I'll tell ya what, you can probably just play the class as is as long as it's 3.5. I've had players do that with multiple 3.5 classes and no one really noticed a huge difference.

I know you may not want to spend the time, but it might be fun to work with your DM to make the class a little more powerful with a couple tweaks. In my experience, 3.5 classes are usually a little underpowered compared to PF - but not so much that they are unplayable.

I hope this helps! Sorry I couldn't tell you more.

Hey...I got a response...at least that's something! =)

We're all learning the Pathfinder tweaks from 3.5, even the GM. So I was just checking to see if anyone knew of any issues with the Chaos Mage in the new rules.

It is definitely a...unique...class. It's a Wisdom based arcane caster. Like a sorcerer, there are no spell books or spell memorization (ALWAYS hated spell memorization). You don't even know any specific spells. What you get is complete spell creation freedom. You work through a set of steps to determine a DC check to cast a spell by adding on various components (damage, range, duration, etc).

Once you have your spell statted out and a DC determined, you roll to cast the spell, Ability Mod + stuff + D20 and attempt to tie/beat the DC. If you succeed, the spell goes off without a hitch. If you fail, it fizzles. If you crit fail, you might suffer some chaos backlash as the forces of pure chaos that you attempt to mold and bend to your will instead infuse your body...sending you down one of the Paths of Chaos as your body slowly...alters...and takes you down a path of disfigurement &/or agony that will only end in what you hope is merciful death...but probably much, much worse.

Messing with chaos is not for the timid.

I did little to NO justice in that super quick description. I recommend googling/wiki the book if you can find it and look at the premise for yourself.

It just looks like a blast to play. I would be hesitant to use the free-form spell creation system without working up some generic, old-stand-by spells at a table for time saving purposes. But playing on PBP, I can take my time to craft spells and really have fun with the concept.

I'll have to see if I can do it without the need of a conversion.

You know, I heard of that class a while ago and I thought it sounded really fun (but dangerous).

I think that you should just go ahead and play it - let gods sort it out. Any problems that occur with the Pathfinder system regarding the Chaos Mage would most likely occur in 3.5 games, so I say, have at it (with the permission of your DM of course).

Good luck not getting yourself killed!
