Campaign updates and discussion

Homebrew and House Rules

I have been running a home few campaign that I made from scratch. I was curious if anyone would be interested in reading what I have going on on a weekly basis. I thought this might be interesting for other GM's to maybe get ideas from or talk with someone else who trys to come up with their own new and interesting ideas.

My basic concept is to introduce the cast of pcs and then give a couple paragraphs of what happened that week, then maybe get into detail on some traps or puzzles I put together.

Also if there is a more appropriate place for this the. I would move the discussion there, let me know if you are interested, if I get 7 or 8 folks who would like to see that I will do it.

I'd read this. And discuss it. I too am a DM who uses an all original setting for his campaigns.

Alright, noticed I hadn't received much of a response here, and when I thought about it, that made sense. I'm basically asking if people care about something they have no reason to care about without providing an example. So what I'm going to do is throw a blog together cover the first 5 sessions of my game do far (we're about 10 deep). And put a link up. That way you know what it is I'm talking about.

Really I'm looking for a few things, a sounding board for ideas, a place to talk about rulings and concepts, and maybe to provide my thought process when I'm putting a game together. Anyway thanks for taking a look at this even if you did not respond. I'll probably have the blog put together roughly this evening, ill link it when I'm done.

Alright so, here is a link to the blog. I broke it down initially into 2 posts. the first is the broad strokes of the campaign and the cast of characters. The second post is the game and my thoughts on how the sessions went. I will probably drop a new thread every now and again with a link to the blog as I update it.

I figure no one may read it, but it gives me a chance to rehash mentally what I am doing and provide some points of discussion as I keep it up.

So whenever I type in this link, all I get is shuffled to a "take this survey" screen that won't let me skip.

I do want to read this, help me out.

hmmm I don't know. I just tried it and it worked. So I'm not sure. I will have to take a minute to see what is going on

try this? My blog

Blog link worked for me. As long as the blog posts don't explode into tl;dr length (the current length is pretty good), I would really enjoy reading about someone else's experiences.

yeah, I want to keep them to about that length, I guess it depends on how in depth I want to be on the encounters, but hopefully adding maps, etc will help to remove some of the discussion- I guess I can get more into encounter design sometimes, but this is more a big strokes, rules, and what-have you thing. The first 3 sessions were pretty hum-drum by that account, but context matters so I may as well start at the beginning.

Works great, looks great, I like it.

I have now posted the intro as well as sessions 1-3. I added a couple of my maps. I may not have all of them so I will eventually either have to recreate them or not post them.

Thanks to the folks who have taken a look. These ones have clearly been a little more rushed than I hope for in the future, so I will work on editing and format more as I go.

Hey mate, just noticed this thread. I will definitely have a read of this. Just curious, I noticed the .com.au address for your blog, are you based in Australia?

I don't think so. I spend most of my time in Missouri. I didn't notice that I was .com.au, so thats interesting.

I hope to have sessions 4&5 loaded tomorrow, and within a week or so I will be caught up to session 10 and plan to have it be part of my saturday post game ritual.

Added Session 4

Okay I posted session 5. I have so far had around 100 views (not counting myself). So thanks everyone who has been checking this out. I don't want to keep bumping this thread exactly- I mean if you aren't interested I don't want to keep putting it in your face, but I want to make sure people who have been interested know what's up. Anyway, again thanks for looking and if you have comments or questions feel free to post them!

I have questions.

1) How long have you been DMing?

2) How do you keep up with these ideas? Because I think I would love to be in this game.

I have been DMing on and off for a pretty long time, around 18 years- and I'm about 30.

The older guy at the game actually taught my brother, another friend, and I to play. I learned and played a lot of ODnD, and then moved from 1e to 2e after. My brother and I used to play a lot of games back were we would swap the DM so I put in a lot of hours behind the screen.

I come up with ideas a lot of the time on the fly. I could do a whole blog on this probably. But I think of a villain first. What does he want and why? That is the hardest part. Once you have that the rest is kind of easy.

I make my players come up with a super simple backstory. Where are you from (REAL broad strokes here- "a big city" would work) I let them pick traits AND have a reason for it. Once I have that I can make up subplots.

Lastly I make up stuff as I go. There is some improv skill involved with that. Whenever my player asks for something, I will usually say
"yes, and..."

They could ask me "Can I have a +5 holy avenger?", I would say "yes... and you will have to fight your father for the right to own it, your father is the head of the paladin Order you belong to." ADVENTURE!!

I could go more in depth, but I think people often over think stuff that doesn't matter. Knowing what the chief exports in your capital city is fine... I guess, but I would much rather have 1 fleshed out NPC with motivations and goals.

Session 6 has been posted. I've been trying to go back and edit some of the previous ones a little bit more. These posts will begin to slow down soon, I have to get ready for this fridays game sometime- but I want to get updated to session 10 (the one we just did) before friday. Once I do that I may end up throwing a new post up every saturday to let anyone interested know a new session is updated.

Session 7 is up. I need to add a map and probably do some more editing- so sorry if it's not super clean. Let me know what you think. I'm having fun doing these, so thanks for clicking through.

I now have had well over 200 views. So whoever is clicking thanks. I imagine its only one guy doing it over and over to make me feel good about myself.

I posted up session 8, and I posted a map of Proveria. I have a better more detailed map... but it has things I don't want my players to see. So I colored in the one I give to them and hope that it will do for our purposes here. Thanks for looking.

Episode 8

Enjoy

Episode 9 is posted now, nice thing about this is you could drop this concept as a 1 night adventure into any game- level 5/6 is probably best for this, but you could pump up the bad guys and make it good for higher levels pretty easy.

Go to Episode 10 part 1. Sorry this ended up being pretty long so I am breaking it into 2 parts. No map this time, unfortunately the party dodged every encounter I made and got into a few I didn't. Leave comments if you like what you read.

Episode 10.2.

Just finishes this part. After the next post, sometime next week, I'll open a different thread linking to whatever happens in tonights game.

Thanks, for looking
