Alternate Adventure Ideas for Playtesting Next

4th Edition

Scarab Sages

Basically, the adventure included with the playtest kit is simply not the kind of adventure that I enjoy playing or running any more (despite my incredible memories of this particular location). There was a time when I had all weekend to play and a long dungeon crawl was awesome. That was a long time ago.

So, I asked myself where I could find a good adventure that I could adjust easily that allowed me to playtest the rules in a few hours? The most logical answer was a PFS module.

I have been very busy with school for the last year and a half and haven't kept up with all the modules released (I am not eager to see exactly how much it will cost me to catch up ;)). So I am asking for advice from you guys. What recent modules do you think could fill this bill? Ideally it would have an interesting story, not feel too railroady, have at least one interesting locale, and a variety of encounter types.

Thanks for your help. I look forward to hearing your ideas.

If you're wanting something that can be played in one sitting, I'd suggest checking out the Pathfinder Society Scenarios. They're designed to be played in a 4-hour convention slot, so they should go pretty fast.

My personal favorites are The Frostfur Captives, Tide of Twilight and Silent Tide.

Of those, I think Silent Tide or Frostfur Captives would be easiest to convert.

Quick blurbs:
Frostfur: The Party has to escort a bunch of Goblin prisoners across a frozen wilderness without getting them killed, either from enemies or themselves! Lots of combat and roleplay potential here, and a good setup for creative solutions.

Tide of Twilight: The Party must go into the woods and defeat a group of evil druids who are trying to turn all the humans in the area into savage beasts. This one is a lot of fun, but it would probably be difficult to convert.

Silent Tide: I don't really remember much about this one because it's been a while, but it was a fun city-based adventure with a variety of different encounter types. And who doesn't like fighting undead?

Have fun!

The Exchange

I think the word from above is that DMs should start running this with their own adventures as soon as possible.

I haven't played any Pathfinder Society Scenarios for ages, but most of them are fairly straightforward to serve as playtest adventures for Next. Then again, you shouldn't limit yourself to Pathfinder adventures. Since one of the ideas of Next is to support play over a number of different playstyles and for various editions, I'd personally go for testing a number of classic adventures from various editions of the game.

Yes, I want to see how these new-fangled adventurers fare in the Tomb of Horrors. ;)

EDIT: Also, with a bit of quick Google-Fu you should be able to find the D&D 3e archives, which has a number of free 3e adventures. Those should also work just fine. :)
