Shadow Lodge

Ok so I'm building a 1st level dungeon for my new group this thursday. The dungeon is an old pumping station now inhabited by a joint tribe of goblins & mites with the goblins living on the top floor while the mites and there vermin live on the bottom. On the top floor I have the party set to fight the goblin chieftan, a cavalier who goes by the moniker Gorguntha "The Fiercely Rotound" as a mini-boss. He is built to fight with a horse chopper, dogslicer, and various alchemical items including fuse grenades firecrackers and tanglefoot bags. All of this is meant to allow him to trip enemies and then assaulting them while they are prone, lock them up with slung status effects, or just create mayhem through explosives (or kamikaze). Now my problem is I'm torn between what mount to give him as I originally had him riding a mangy wolf but while i was looking through the book I found that Dire Bat animal companions at early levels are actually ride able by a goblin and thought it would be such glorious chaos to watch this portly goblin lay down hell as he flies about the harassing the battlefield. Problem is I worry that the encounter might be a bit to challenging I come here to ask for support and council, so any ideas?

Ya I would be concerned about the mini boss being mounted on a flying creature at 1st lv. Unless your party has some serious ranged abilities the mini boss could pick them apart. I would go with a goblindog maybe, that should leave it difficult but not unduly so. How big of an area are you planning to allow for the mini boss encounter??
